While I enjoyed Skyward Sword's controls for the most part, there's seriously no doubt this would alienate a lot of fans who simply weren't fond of the controls or weren't on board with them at all. All I can say is that they should give the players options.

  • Options are always nice, but I always planned on using Wii-mote anyways.
  • a little muffled
Motion controls usually suck, but I haven't played Skyward Sword so I don't know if they work there. 3D Zelda is meh anyway, though I don't expect many to agree with that.
  • Well, now I'm relieved that they won't be turning their back on motion controls.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^SS motion controls aren't really comparable to most other motion controls, in that they're actual motion controls, rather than acting as a button that requires more effort to press than necessary.

Not saying you'd like them, but they really have to be tried out to be judged.
  • a little muffled
Good to know, I guess. I doubt I'll actually play the game anytime soon, though.
  • they're actual motion controls, rather than acting as a button that requires more effort to press than necessary.

That sounds... even worse than most motion controls... >.>

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^^^Same. TP had some issues but what I played from SS seemed to solve almost all of them.

From experience, Skyward Sword's combat controls are fantastic. They actually respond well a lot of the time, go in the desired compass direction that you're swiping, and it doesn't take much skill to do so(well, physical skill that is. Mental skill is another story.). It also doesn't need much calibration, and that was a recurring problem in most Motion+ games.
  • You can change. You can.
Honestly, i don't understand why there is this big need for motion controlling. No, I don't want to swing my sword like link, parry and so on. Not interested.

If I wanted to learn swordmanship and fencing, I'd enroll in a class and then kill myself for being anything like Alex at all.

    ^^^^How so?
  • ^^Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I find that motion controls make some games more interesting (while of course many games don't need them).

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^^There's not. Sony and Microsoft jumped on it when they saw the Wii doing well and Nintendo is actually trying to make it something that's genuinely viable for gaming.

^Agreed. I think No More Heroes would lose a good deal of its charm on a 'hardcore' console.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Motion controls are a thing that can be cool and fun, as long as every game does not try to shoehorn them in.

I am okay with Zelda using them.

Also, dammit, I forgot to ask for SS for Christmas.
  • Supposedly, the PlayStation Move is actually much better than the Wii Remote Plus, but it has no games.

@Juan: Aaand that just proved my point. Not everyone is gonna be interested in it, so it isn't such a good idea to force people into it.

@Abyss: And I heard that you have to calibrate it constantly. That can prove to be a problem.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
There's something about the acronym that makes me uncomfortable.

^Deciding one franchise will focus on it=/=forcing people into it.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I like that the Wii U will support three different inputs: traditional controller, touchpad and motion controls.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Kinect is a lot of fun with party games.

We have Fruit Ninja, Adventures, and some dance game, and it's a lot of fun playing with family or friends and being silly.

I don't think it really has a good "serious" game yet, so I dunno how it works for something that actually requires immersion.

^^That's what I don't like about it. For the longest time, I was afraid this meant motion controls would be left in the dust. I still wonder how they are going to deal with this juggling act.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^My issue with Kinect is that it has amazing applications in several fields, and is kinda useable in gaming. And they made it a gaming device. Which works, but I kinda feel like it'd be better elsewhere.

^I don't think that's the case at all, especially given this announcement. I think the system will just have an amazing variety of games.
  • ^^^^How so?

Dunno really.  It just sounds like I wouldn't like it much because it's all... motiony.  At least if the motion controls are just replacements for regular button presses then it pretty much feels the same as a non-motion-controlled game, albeit with more wrist strain.  Motion control just doesn't appeal to me though and I don't particularly want to have to actually, like... pay attention to its existence.

    Or something.

    I don't even know, man.

Not like it matters.  Monster Hunter Tri is the only Wii game I'll likely ever play for any length of time.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Fair enough. It's not for everyone.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
There's something about the acronym that makes me uncomfortable.

I'm not sure which joke to make.

    @Juan:

    >implying that Skyward Sword covers more than the most fundamental basics of swordsmanship
    >also, implying that one or two attack buttons is better than a combat system with depth
    >also, implying by extension that the Jedi Knight games aren't awesome

Actually, I haven't Skyward Sword. But I worry that my actual redoubling technique will make the motion controls flip their shit and throw in extra strikes I don't intend to make. <_<

^Agreed. I think No More Heroes would lose a good deal of its charm on a 'hardcore' console.

I dunno, I had plenty of fun with the NMH port to PS3. Didn't play the original one, of course, so what do i know

^I actually think that the simpler a combat system, the happier I'm with it. Unless it's a fighting game, anyway.
  • edited 2011-12-21 20:41:32
I like that SS (which I hope to get for Christmas) has justified motion controls, in that you're swinging a sword. It's not shoehorned in awkwardly.

^To me, the NMH port just felt like a DMC clone, a much different feeling than I got when I played 2 on Wii.
  • @Malk: Eh, you're right. It's just one franchise out of many, many others. Nintendo probably knows what they're doing.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    >Implying that Skyward Sword has anywhere near the combat depth of controller based games like Marvel Vs. Capcom and Blazblue

^^^Just the simple charm of holding something that feels like a lightsaber beam katana really enhanced the feel for me.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
My favorite moment in SS thus far, BTW, is what happens in the first boss battle if you telegraph your attacks too much. The boss grabs your sword out of your hand, lectures you about how you shouldn't do that, then throws it at you.
  • ^ That sounds awesome.

One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^^ Could do. Depends on the enemies moreso than anything else. If there are consistent, numerous enemies that can engage you with skill, then having the eight strike directions combining that with footwork provides a plethora of options. Even moreso if the weapons are physical objects and intercept one-another.

For further explanation, consult Jedi Academy.

^^ That is absolutely fucking awesome and I am very pleased.
