Midichlorians

They don't CREATE the Force, they allow human beings to CONNECT with it.

It's in the goddamn movie, guys.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Actually, they're a sign of Lucas growing out of his republic-serial-nostalgic-spiritual-hippie phase and growing into a skeptical, world-weary 'adult'.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. I mean, I know the concept of the force and the mention of Lucas tell me it's Star Wars related, but...yeah, not ringing any bells.

Is this some fic or something?
  • No rainbow star
Midichlorians are some sort of bacteria or virus that lets people become Jedi
  • You can change. You can.
oh. That sounds as bad as anything else coming from the EU, really.

    >Pretending the vast majority of Star Wars Canon isn't basically fanfiction this point.

  • No rainbow star
It's in the three prequel movies, which puts it in the main canon

The EU did not create it

    You can change. You can.
no, see the implication is that the vast majority of star wars canon is...well

    ^Tis a joke, you know.
  • No rainbow star
^ Well my joke radar is fried
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
See, what a lot of people don't get about Star Wars is that the majority of the original trilogy isn't Lucas.

    The prequels? That's all Lucas.

See, what a lot of people don't get about Star Wars is that the majority of the original trilogy isn't Lucas.

It is? I was reading the conference he gave for EICTV a coupla days ago and he did mention the creative process behind a lot of things, like Han, Chewie and Leia.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Some of it's him. But a lot of stuff is heavily edited...for example, the original idea was a Flash Gordon remake.

    You can change. You can.
Not according to him, at least. He said that the idea of Star Wars came to him because he was watching Flash Gordon, though.

Not like it matters much, as Star Wars has one of the most convoluted production stories of all time.

He also pretends the body actor for Darth Vader doesn't exist, seemingly for no reason. He really isn't the most trustworthy source ever.
  • You can change. You can.
He said David Prowse wasn't much of a good vocal actor. Which is..well, true. Although I do like the idea of a farmboy Darth Vader.
  • I didn't think midichlorians were all that rageworthy, since it was part of the canon since I was a kid and it isn't hard for me to accept.

Anyway, I don't think physical manifestations of something otherwise mystical makes it any less special, necessarily. The human brain is physical, and hell if we have a perfect understanding of THAT.
  • You can change. You can.
It's a rationalization of a mystical concept, though. God is a lot less fantastical when you realize that he's (or may be) a social construct.
  • I always preferred the option that midichlorians just kind of gather around Force instead of being the "explanation".  Keeps things mystical and mysterious, but still gives the Jedi a way to ballpark things and show bureaucrats they're not screwing around when they say they need to train someone before he accidentally the universe.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The version I find more interesting is that midichlorians are actually parasites that feed on force sensitives.
  • I always thought the Midichlorians came as a RESULT of being strong in the Force. Not, that being strong attracts them.
  • I never really got all the anger about midichlorians. It can easily be retconned as just being a part of the natural Force.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^It's an attempt to fix something that wasn't broken.
  • You can change. You can.
It can easily be retconned as just being a part of the natural Force.

The fact that you dn't think of a narrative device as something that contributes to the world presented in the story, but instead as something that can be retconned speaks volumes, really.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
That particular one, I'd argue, doesn't contribute to the world presented in the story. Well, not in a positive way, at any rate.
  • You can change. You can.
I never said it does. In fact, the second sentence practically implies that it does not contribute to Star Wars in a positive way. At least, based in Orcus' statement.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Oh...got it. Never mind.
  • After that last liveblog thread, I thought we might've been done with this.
