Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT SKYRIM IS

    /only semi serious

But seriously, it's surprising, considering how much everyone has been talking about it everywhere.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Hell, my parents know what Skyrim is, and they didn't even hear it from me.

At least he didn't ask "You don't know who Soulja Boy is?"

But in all seriousness, you don't even having a passing familiarity? Even while only minimally following gaming nowadays, I can at least give a very broad description of it. Of course, computer engineering classes are full of nerds, but you get the point.

Can't blame him. Even if you haven't played it, you can't go to a forum without seeing people discussing Skyrim. Including this one.

    They're somethin' else.
He sounded almost exactly like (and acted like) Barney from How I Met Your Mother.

    Aw, man this looks snowcloneable.

I love how this thread got like 5 responses over the course of half a minute while every thing else is thrown to the wind unceremoniously

I'm going to take this opportunity to remind the people who don't bother with reading the rules thread when there are new posts in it that we do have new rules about how much snowcloning is okay.
  • And I was going to make a thread called "OMFG You DON'T know what RIMJOB is!?"
  • Realistically, I'd have no idea what Skyrim was if not for the fact that I was already mildly interested in The Elder Scrolls via playing Morrowind and Oblivion.  I'd probably know it's a video game, but other than that... not much.
  • dude..I can kinda get your point..but even my roommate who plays nothing but Modern Warfare knows what Skyrim is in a vague way.
  • I am vaguely interested in what social circles Schitzo runs in now.
  • They're somethin' else.
Oh trust, me, I'm friends with (non forum) tropers and young nerds. But I only have a very vague recollection of what the elder scrolls are, having never played them before. I also didn't know what Skyrim is and hardly took it upon myself to look it up.
  • That's understandable, I guess. I was just wondering why you never heard the word Skyrim itself, in the same way a person has never heard the words Star Wars or Harry Potter.

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Elder Scrolls: WRPG series published by Bethesda, set in a MEHF setting and with an emphasis on a wide-open sandbox world.  First two games (Arena and Daggerfall) are DOS-era games now available as (albeit proprietary) freeware.  More recent entries are Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim.  Oblivion, the fourth game, is the source of the "criminal scum" meme.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I keep thinking to post as though I don't know what Skyrim is but realize Juan will come in and point out I've posted full knowledge of Skyrim.

    So fuck you Juan. >:|
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I'm trying to figure out what MEHF is, but I can't quite wrap my brain around it.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    ^Medieval High Fantasy.

I'd argue that that's not entirely true, though it does apply to some of the countries featured in the series.

Oh. I probably would have gotten that if the 'E' wasn't there.

And isn't Oblivion the only one that's really MEHF? Skyrim is more nordic, and Morrowind is just weird.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Arena covers the whole continent, so it has MEHF.

    Dunno about Daggerfall.

    Medieval European High Fantasy

^^^ Oh, I thought it was roughly based on the Tolkienesque tradition, with some variants.

^^ Oh, didn't know that.  Then again, the Norse countries are part of Europe...

One foot in front of the other, every day.
The depiction of the Nords in Skyrim could only be considered medieval -- reasonably early medieval, to be precise. I'm thinkin' before 1066.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
While that's true, it generally isn't what people think of when they hear Medieval Europe.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
If we went on public definitions...

    Yeah. Gonna stop there.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The point you're about to bring up is a fair one. I'm just talking in terms of subgenres :P
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
^^^ Then what do they think of?  As far as I can tell, MEF would be knights and lords and peasants...

...wait, that's like central European, like French/Italian/Spanish/German.  I guess.

Then Arthurian stuff is related, and Norse/Germanic stuff gets lumped in when you make it high fantasy in part because Tolkien.

One foot in front of the other, every day.
There's a lot of ways to break up historical European subgenres for the purposes of media, y'know. <_<

^ For the time period, most of Europe was very consistent with the rest of Europe. You don't get plate armoured knights fighting Vikings or anything. So characterising something by geography alone doesn't quite work, or it at least shuts off a variety of possibilities. For instance, the Saxon, Teutonic, ect. lands immediately south of Scandinavia were populated by extremely similar people, albeit they lived in a warmer climate with heavier forests and greater access to resources.

After all, many trademarks of these cultures show up in cultures immediately related to them. Thus how you get the tale of Sigurd from the Nordic folk and the tale of Siegfried from the Germans -- extremely similar stories altered somewhat by audience and time period. Likewise, you get the Arthurian mythologies through the Welsh, English and French alike.
  • They're somethin' else.
Well, yes, I kept hearing the name, but It never occurred to me to just look it up.
  • Until I read this thread, I had no idea what Skyrim was. I assumed it was a probably a new computer game of some sort, but not exactly what.
  • Yeah, OP made me laugh.
  • You can change. You can.
    So fuck you Juan. >:|

    Only after the third date.

    Likes cheesecake unironically.
I don't see what's so strange about this. Sure, it's hard to miss that many people talk about Skyrim (unless you don't visit the internet), but you don't learn about it by that alone. If you don't have any interest in the subject, you don't normally don't try to learn more and there is only so much you can learn (and actually remember) in passing.

That happened several times. If I had no interest in Skyrim and didn't know Elder Scrolls, I'm sure the only things I'd know is that it's a popular current game and probably of the fantasy genre. Maybe I would also notice that it's apparently snowy.

Also "Nerdbro" seems to be one of these people, who really, really need a punch in the face.
