When you have a friend that actually uses gratuitous Japanese.

  • Gratuitous Japanese may be the most annoying thing ever. I hate it so much.

Luckily none of my friends do this. Thank God.
  • You can change. You can.

Ok, that quoted post was fucking gold. Seriously funny. Nothing better than mixing two languages up so that things don't make sense in either of them. Especially if you use idioms and grammar of one language with words from one where it doesn't apply. It kind of reminded me fondly of this old comedic julekalender (TV show that runs from the 1st to the 24th of december, hence christmas calendar, a scandinavian thing, I think),where they would mix up Danish (often in dialect form) and English with hilarious results. I guess that's truly untranslatable comedy, since you would more or less lose most of the humour by translating the entire thing into English. So anyways, props to whoever put that together(nohaynicklibre?), though it does actually kind of require some basic Japanese skills to be found truly funny.

I'm now thinking about making a joke in a mix of Danish, English, Japanese and German just so that only a tiny fraction of people will ever understand it. :p

Anyways, I haven't really heard much gratuitous Japanese in real life, even among animefans, it seems to mostly be an internet-phenomenon. If we are talking about gratuitous uses of foreign languages I have to say that I've come across far more gratuitous use of English than Japanese, worse yet I myself have used it. Stop using English terms for things which have perfectly fine Danish equivalents, people (including myself).

Oh, and living in Japan right now and learning Japanese, I have to say that the Japanese use of English is generally worse than any English person's use of Japanese. There are quite a few words, where original Japanese words have simply been phased out by an English loan-word. That said, often an English loan-word which has the same basic meaning as an older Japanese word, will often be used to have a different nuance of meaning than the Japanese one, meaning that they still use both. But I can't really call it gratuitous English at this point, since most of these terms are really just part of the language by now on par with any other Japanese words.

Y'know, historically, there are many examples of one language borrowing a word from another language to be used for a meaning that already has a native word that's assigned to it. This often comes about from a perception in the speaking community that the other language is more, ah, "prestigious" is what I think the proper terminology is. This was the case for French for a large part of English's history and is part of an explanation for why English borrowed so heavily from it. Cultural perception of French as a prestigious language survives even to the present day, and borrowed French words can be used to sound "fancier" *coughRaritycough*

Seems to me that the situation here is similar to well-documented phenomena. Some weeaboos see Japan or Japanese as culturally superior, and adopt words from it into their own speech. Incorrectly pronounced loanwords aren't uncommon either even if the adoptive language has a phonology that it can fit into. Look at "karaoke". It went from "ka ra okay" to "carry okie".

It's an amusing fact that a change in language can come about due to some form of ignorance, and the change can become standard if it gets enough use.
