Slow or confusing prologues/ pilots

edited 2011-11-21 17:32:56 in General
They're somethin' else.
Case in point, "Baccano!"

I'd like the swallow the hype the entire TV Tropes hivemind just built up, but this first episode is sure convoluted. But ok, I'll keep watching. I guess.

Using TvTropes as a referent for anything quality is bad and you should feel bad. >:|

not like Baccano is bad, mind you, but using a source which tends to put almost anything in a pedestal is not exactly wise, young Schitzo.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Baccano is pretty awesome.

Be prepared for more confusion, though. It's kind of the point.
  • They're somethin' else.
Its alright, and everyone's pretty loony and immortal, but the show is also slow so far. I said confusing AND slow.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I got bored with Baccano halfway through. =/ I dunno, it felt like all the characters I found the most interesting got the least exposure, and things felt like they were taking too long to explain themselves.

It wasn't bad but I couldn't get into it. I might retry after finishing the bajillion or so animus I care to see more.

^ Yet another difference between us; I toughed it out through the rather slow beginning of Baccano! and found it well worth the hustle. Same with Durarara!! (engaging beginnings really are Narita's weak point, huh?). I didn't find Baccano! particularly obtuse to begin with, because I don't ask questions when I watch stuff, and I could tell from the setup that the resolution would be worth it. But Gankutsuou bored the everloving you-know-what out of me, and I didn't see anything worth sticking around for. u mad?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
No. Sir I am incredibly calm.

Yeah, I can see that the end-product is probably pretty good, but really the only characters I really liked all that much were the doofuses, the homunculus girl, and the psycopath and his bride, and not enough really happened for me to feel like it was going anywhere.

Like I said, I don't think it's bad. It's just... not to my taste.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Oh yeah, Baccano.

That's another thing I need to watch.

    Aaaaaaargh

    They're somethin' else.
It's hailed everywhere as a "why i started watching anime in the first place" anime, akin to Cowboy Bebop and the like.

I suppose I could see where they're coming from, but still. Bold words this anime isn't quite living up just yet so far.

Well, what do you expect from TVTropes?

It was worth watching, but not so much so that I'd compare it to Cowboy Bebop, as far as influence goes. It's certainly flawed enough that I couldn't consider it to be a paragon of anime.

    Question, Everest:

Why do you expect everyone who disagrees with you to be mad?

I don't. I was just commenting on how once again, Malk and I had what I consider to be a noticeable difference in opinions, this time concerning the relative obtuseness of series we attempted to watch. Have I been tossing around that silly quote that often? If so, I haven't noticed, and I apologize.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Everest and I are peas and carrots as far as I'm concerned. :)
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
I tried getting into Baccano! twice and couldn't get the past the first episode. Then I tried a third time and LOVED it! Once the Railtracer becomes relevant is when the show hits its stride.

    ^^, ^ Indeed.
  • I tend to have the policy of "anything the majority of TVTropes hails as some amazing example of a genre/work isn't some amazing example of a genre/work".

Still haven't gotten around to watching Baccano. Doesn't seem like my thing.

At least Malk and I agree that Madoka's good.

"I tend to have the policy of "anything the majority of TVTropes hails as some amazing example of a genre/work isn't some amazing example of a genre/work". "

I wouldn't say it's an automatic indicator of poor quality; their taste isn't generally that bad. It's just annoying when they put the things they like on a pedestal because a bunch of other people share their opinion.
  • Hey, did you know that My Little Pony is single-handedly responsible for making girls' shows good?

Ah, it's just that I noticed you used the phrase "u mad" often after making a reasonable post and I'm like "What's up with this man?"

The fact that TvT likes Buffy means that TvT has good taste.

    Although it isn't perfect, though.

It's mostly to indicate that, while I hold a certain opinion on the work in question and will voice it, I don't want to get involved in some protracted debate about it because it probably won't make either side see things differently if the original statement didn't.
  • You can change. You can.
    oh ah

i'm probably stupid, cuz i don't read it like that at all ._.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I admit it's a nonstandard usage of the meme, so it's my fault if you're confused about that. :P
  • They're somethin' else.
Same thing with Buffy, though in this case, Buffy's prologue isn't slow or confusing in the slightest, so I WILL give it a chance when I have time.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Everest and I seem to only be in agreement concerning moe anime...

    uguu.

As for TV Tropes' taste I think it's important to remember that the people who edit pages usually like them, so unless it's something like Twilight that has a heavy load of haters it's usually best to take with a grain of salt.
  • Good people don't end up here.
...Baccano is slow? I think that's the last word I'd use to describe it. I can't think of a show with less filler.
  • You can change. You can.

    I don't think slow = filler.

The Wire comes to mind. It barely if ever has filler, and it is incredibly slow.

Of course, it's because it's naturalistic and all that, but still, it can feel a bit jarring if you're not used to it.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^^Baccano falls into "confusing" rather than slow.

Persona 4? Now that's something with a slow start.

We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Why hello there, first chapter of Preludes and Nocturnes!

What's that? You're going to show me a fractured and abstract montage of people dreaming and performing rituals and shit before you ever actually explain what's going on?

man, you're just lucky you're a Neil Gaiman book
  • You can change. You can.
Yeah, preludes and nocturnes is not the best intro ever. On reread, the amount of foreshadowing is staggering, though.

Also, doctor destiny's rampage is still the most chilling thing I've read in comics.

"Baccano falls into "confusing" rather than slow."

No, it was definitely a slow start. It's been a little while since I watched it, but I don't recall being disappointed with the presentation, as far as being confusing goes; a good intro should be ambiguous. But they probably could have built up upon that better; I don't mind if a first episode is slow, but the next few after it shouldn't drag and rely on a plot point/plot points 1/3-1/2 of the way through to keep interest.

"...Baccano is slow? I think that's the last word I'd use to describe it. I can't think of a show with less filler."

It didn't have much filler, but it was still really slow to start, just like Durarara!! Everything fell into place, but it took a little while.

    Tell me about it...

that and Seasons of Mists were probably my favorite Sandman stories thus far.
