"Character X is too whiny!"

  • You can change. You can.
The definition of hero reflect the ideal of a hero. But as we see, there's the anti-hero concept which deals with characters who are considered heroes that don't fit in the mold. Like the Byronic hero, the bad boy and the reluctant hero. Also, are you gonna say a selfish hero can't exist?

All of this archetypes are there to go against the established archetype of heroism as it's normally defined in literature.

besides, the kid barely did anything according to his own will, as established. That was the whole conflict of Evangelion. Shinji being Gendo's hound dog against the Angels.

  • But you never had any to begin with.
^^ Except I've seen the same people say these things.

Shinji Ikari, from Evangelion: Whines because everybody is dead/insane/horribly injured, and the world is going to hell.

Actually, he whines because he doesn't get what he wants, and because things aren't always easy for him.  He'd be the same way whether the events of the series (with the Evas and the angels and whatnot) happened or not, because that's just his personality.  Though of course I wouldn't have it any other way.  Evangelion would be weird if Shinji wasn't like that... >.>

"I think the main reason a lot of people dislike Shinji is because they expected a hero, especially in a huge mecha show, or at least for him to get better (yes, yes, I know depression doesn't just go away, but my point stands)."

Well then screw those people for not knowing what they're getting into. Heck, even just the absurdity of each fight breaks the idea that it could be about the mecha battles.
  • ^ I mean more of a subconscious thing.
  • I think the only time I ever felt truly annoyed by a whiny character was with Allegretto from Eternal Sonata.

Samwell Tarly's character in A Storm of Swords is probably the upper limit on how much whining I'm willing to tolerate.

You thought Sam whined too much? I feel like a lot of his troubles, while not as great as that of some other characters, were pretty legitimate.

I agree, I just said I wouldn't be able to tolerate much more than that.

Hm. Fair enough. I just don't remember ever feeling like he qualified as being "bitchy" at any point, considering his situation.
