Back in my Yugioh/drug addiction days I slipped into that world, and then after I got out of it a ton of friends I knew who either got too deep into video games, the internet or drugs eventually retreated to apartments or homes, and have never left them ever again.

It has a different term here, it's not hikikomori, but we call them gollums because of how inhuman they become after withdrawing completely from society and how warped their minds become after spending so much time avoiding society. There are a few people I know who are afraid of socialization and what not, and some of them eventually ended up commiting suicide in their homes or starving to death.

My friends that are still alive that are trying to readjust still talk to themselves or have panic attacks when too many people are in the room, so they only feel safe when it comes to one on one socialization, or internet forums.

I tend not to go out without my parents, because I lack the independence to do so. (I don't have a job, or a license, or a car.)
