The only place I've ever been a mod is Anonus's forum, and even there 90% of my moderatorly actions have been moving threads and banning spambots.

I dunno how I'd be as a mod. I'd probably be fine. But I might end up trying too hard to not come off as dictatorial or asshole-ish.

See, I worry about that too. I don't know if I'd be able to put my foot down when the situation calls for it. I think I'd be too worried about upsetting people.

Well, I'm applying myself to my own standards, which is "people who think they should be mods, usually should never be allowed to be one."

I think some people who try to become mods definitely do so mostly because they want the power or the popularity or whatever.

Still, I do not believe that merely wanting to or asking to be a mod should disqualify one from that position. I feel like if a person can generally command respect, can be impartial in his or her decisions, shows no signs of being elitist, is kind to new users, and honestly believes he or she can make a positive difference in a forum, then that person generally will make a good mod, regardless of if he or she campaigns for it or is just chosen by the staff.

Plus, if one sticks to the "people who do not want to be mods make the best mods" rule, then I think you can have the problem of mods only being picked because the current staff knows them rather than because the person actually possesses the leadership skills I mentioned earlier. Thus, being open to having people request moderation responsibilities may help bring attention to people who would otherwise be ignored because they are unpopular.

Personally, I do not believe I would be a good mod because I lack those leadership traits and that is probably all that needs to be said about that.

I actually disagree with the notion of a mod as a leader. A mod is more of a policeman, if anything.
