Video game manuals nowadays suck.

The same thing that compels people to make fansubs, do fancovers on youtube, or release anything over the intertubes.
Well I made a guide to try to be the first to get a boss guide made for Pokemon Ranger 2
...Apparently not having event exclusive bosses meant it was too incomplete for their standards...
...And then they added a guide by someone else that lacked event bosses...

"Still, what compels people to do this for no money?"
Didn't you say that you weren't writing your stories for the money?
Writing a story is different from hyper-analyzing a possibly MASSIVE game and writing down all your observations. Some of these FAQS required hous upon days of testing to be complete.
That said, players' guides are typically rife with typos and little inaccuracies and weird things. Usually if it's an official guide, the quality is better, though they still have some typos.
I own two such guides. One for the Super Game Boy accessory that came with the cart itself, the other for Super Mario All-Stars.
I used to own two others, for Yoshi's Island and for Pokémon Red and Blue. They were ripped up and disposed of by my mom when I was young, because I was repeatedly reading the first one in conditions with too little lighting, and obsessively reading the second one even when I was supposed to be doing homework.
