Gushing

edited 2011-10-17 21:48:14 in General

Here's the thing that annoys me about gushing. People rave on and on about the thing in question in very abstract terms, only pointing out a few positive qualities, if any qualities at all. Finally, I decide to go check the thing out, and then I can pick out 8 things I don't like about the initial impression alone. At least if someone gave me a balanced critique of what qualities and flaws to expect, I wouldn't experience such cognitive dissonance, which makes a greater impact than me simply liking or not liking something.

It's even more annoying when people downplay issues people may have with the thing in question as simply them being anal. Okay, some people are anal, but that doesn't make the issue automatically disappear.

there, that should cover everything that's yet to come. Call me when everyone realizes how dull this discussion will be.

    toodles.
  • I don't know, when someone enjoys the feelings provoked by something, they gush for it, trying to evoke those feelings in other people.

They're certainly better people in my mind for trying to make people feel nice, although in a kind of an ignorant way, mind you.

Gushing is universal, tearing something down is personal.

Is this about my talking about Eden of the East in IJBMer Updates? Or is that merely coincidental?

    Naah, it's universal.

Counterclock nicely explained the different way that gushing annoys me compared to bashing. It is also irritating when one assumes disliking one is advocating the other.

Does anyone actually read this rule?

  • @Abyss, I only mentioned the other one because when it comes to reactions to things, you either Love it or Hate, otherwise you wouldn't be talking about it.

And chances are, if you love it, you'll want to parade it around for others to see cause it's so great.

But if you hate it, you'll want to tear that shit a new one....

Hey! My post was truly important and contributive! It nicely foreshadowed the shitstorm that won't come now that I announced it.

    You can thank me later.
