IJBM: The best way for me to enjoy a videogame...

...seems to be to know nothing about it, then be plopped down in front of it and play it out of curiosity.  Assuming that it has a reasonable difficulty curve (i.e. doesn't start too hard), and it's got a decent hook to keep me interested, it's easy for me to keep on playing.

But then when I later learn more about the game, and start considering its scope, then I might become less interested.  This doesn't make sense.  IJBM

Odd. The reason I only play a few games at a time is because I like to get to know my games and push my skills to the limit. I tend to have trouble enjoying a game without challenge due to this, though I do know a lot of people go through them for the experience (of course, I'd argue whether it is a "game" any more at that point, but that's semantic nonsense which belongs in another thread).
  • @Glenn. what sort of games you do enjoy for a... comparison.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I enjoy games the most when people hype them up, thus making me skeptical, and proving to be actually that good.

    Like Bioshock or Persona 4.
  • You can change. You can.
I enjoy games the most when I play them.
  • I enjoy games when I play them too!
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
The anticipation is an important part of game enjoyment too. Take my anticipation of Arkham City (tomorrow) and Skyward Sword (sometime in November when I get the cash)
  • The last time I played a game was the Gamecube Era.

  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy

^ Didn't you say you played Portal 2?

     Persona 4

D'oh, that was a kinda redundant suggestion in the other thread.

Huh?  I'm not sure I get what you mean.

But FYI the genres I usually play most of are platforming/action/adventure and JRPG.

Frequently interested in tactical/strategic RPGs but those actually exhibit the phenomenon I described here really well--that either I unexpectedly discover one and start playing and playing and playing or I know it's an SRPG and then decide "this is going to be a pretty complicated game; I'll have to sit down with a lot of time on my hands before I ought to play this".
