Evidently, the US also has a higher incarceration rate than even Russia and China. (though even considering that China simply executes people on the spot, that is still pretty damning)

Prisons are useful, but they can't be the be all and end all. We need to be spending more money on stopping the causes of crimes, rather than just the symptoms.

You'd do well to to look at removing some of the overly harsh rulings that lead to prison time for relatively small crime (drug possession etc) as that could be dealt with by fines community service etc.

Although you'd have to fight the private prison lobby as they make loads of money through the 'slave labour' of the prisoners.
