'The Game'

edited 2011-10-03 19:47:13 in General
I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I think it is pretty stupid.
Especially if you make a big show and dance at 'Losing the Game'.

    No rainbow star
I don't get why people talk about monopoly so much

And they keep saying that they lost at it for some reason
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
Yeah I never really understood this joke. Someone mind explaining it?
  • @Moedantes: People are pretending to do this hivemind thing where they're all "playing" this imaginary game that you lose when you see an image of "The game"

It's basically like youtube comments, minus the public outlet and twice the idiocy.

That made no sense whatsoever but... I'll go with it.
  • You can change. You can.
Nah, The Game is a commentary on the so called "Polar Bear Effect". The idea is that if you sat down and decided to not think about polar bears, you wouldn't be able to get the idea out of your mind, because the act of trying to get an object out of your thoughts involves both recognizing the fact that said object is in your thoughts and mentally interacting with it. The Game is basically the memetic version of this, where you musn't think about the Game in order to win.
  • So... where did that British Prime Minister thing come from then?
  • I thought this had something to do with pick-up artists. If it's about picking up women, I've definitely already lost.

^That's another thing by the same name. A book or something. There's also a rapper by this name. And there was a movie, I think? All unrelated, of course...

My friends mostly don't "play". Or maybe they used to more, but not really any more. I think it's stupid. Proof is of course if a bunch of people around you "lose" and you don't declare out loud that you lost it, it's not like anyone notices and goes "Hey, you lost too, right, admit it!" Serious business, it aint.

Also, that XKCD was amusing, but here's a little aside: I have heard that the game ends when the President loses on national TV. Did anyone else here it told like this?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
The game was a rapper who was famous for his feud with 50 cent. They made up a few years back. If Fiddy and The game can solve their differences then I firmly believe there can be piz-eace in the mid-east.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
    The game?

  • The Game is pretty amusing. Really, the only annoying part about it is when people bitch about how stupid it is.

Apparently it's a big thing at Mathcamp.  Or at least it was.

A friend of mine who went to Mathcamp some years ago told me how the custom there was that when you "lost", you had to announce it.

A troll took advantage of a set of sliding blackboards.  He/she wrote "I LOST THE GAME" behind one of the boards.  The boards were then used in a class.  Cue a large number of people suddenly, in the middle of a class, chattering about how they lost The Game.
