IJBM - "Classy"

edited 2011-09-27 02:11:21 in Meatspace

Inspired by the earlier discussion on the meaning of the word "gay".

Until I came on the internet, I had no idea some people used "classy" to mean "crappy", presumably from the use of the injunction "Stay classy" when someone says something unpleasant. In Britain it isn't used much and it always has the older meaning of something high-class.

Good or bad? I'm not keen about it, because, unlike "gay", the meaning of the word is being changed to mean its total opposite, which is confusing.

  • Technically speaking, At least for me, I don't use it exclusively to mean "It's crappy" I Use it to ironically point out someone who is doing something pretty barbaric in an attempt to point it out to them through use of ironic humor.

Like when a racist talks about beating up people with different colored skin,

    "you stay classy"

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
What Clocky said. It's sarcasm, essentially.
  • You can change. You can.
The "you" seems superflous. And that is saying "It's crappy". the only the difference is, that you're saying it through sarcasm using an adjective that normally means the opposite of "crappy"
