Too much zombie media.

One foot in front of the other, every day.
Don't get me wrong. I'm looking a morally unquestionable way to unleash severe destruction on human tissue just as much as the next person, but I'm getting quite bored of zombie media. I understand that they're narratively convenient, between the symbolism, their incompetence as combatants and the lack of moral questioning that goes into ending them, but right now they're suffering from severe overexposure.

Personally, I much prefer folklorish depictions of the undead in general. For instance, Medieval Europe had "zombies" of a sort. In those stories, though, the undead retained some semblance of free will and even spoke to mortals. How cool is that? You've got a bunch of potential narrative diversity just there, even ignoring the possible religious elements and the mix-and-match nature of folklore.

If we're going to continue the whole undead fad, I'd like to see the a work go the whole way. Not just zombies. Give us vampires that are genuinely frightening and inhuman; artificial constructs built from the corpses of animals; ghosts that infect technology. Forget the zombie apocalypse. Give us an undead apocalypse worth fearing.

    Warhammer Fantasy does it better.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
While I'm all for re-interpreting horror tropes to be spookier, 'zombie' movies where they go along with more classic zombies. (White Zombie, I Walked With A Zombie, etc.) are very different from the kind of 'zombie' movies that people talk about even when they're not directly called zombies. Vincent Pryce's I Am Legend is a perfect example of this with completely sentient vampires that even taunt the protagonist. However, the claustrophobic mood and immense feeling of loneliness are right up there with Romero's best.

Also, I agree there's an over-saturation in recent years, but the same could be said of television and arc-based speculative and supernatural fiction. That doesn't undo the good stuff like Twin Peaks and Battlestar Galactica.

It doesn't undo the quality of those things, but it does mean that myself and likewise frustrated viewers are more likely to overlook something with potential.

Really, I think the horror film fad for zombies has passed, now moving onto 'retro' slasher films.

It's just that video games never think it too late to jump on a bandwagon.
  • You can change. You can.
Video games mostly use it to look cool, rather than to scare.

Call of Duty's nazi zombies comes to mind.
  • Exactly.

What we REALLY need is MOAR GUNDAM.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a Mobile Suit third-person combat game with customisation. Some interesting potential in there.

Eh, gundam bores me to death. I'd prefer something, you know, interesting and stuff.

Gundam is neomonarchic politics meets giant robot space battles. I think that is interesting.

    and i think you're gay

    problem?
  • No U GAY.

"I'd prefer something, you know, interesting"

A curse upon you and your bloodline! A CURSE!

    No U GAY.

I wish I was happy when I watched Gundam. I really do.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Of Gundam stuff I've watched I liked...

The original, though it hasn't aged well

    Zeta

    Double Zeta

    V

    Stardust Memory

    G Gundam

    Gundam X

    Turn-A

Mostly, Gundam's problem is they keep doing the same 'angsty teenager gets a godly mecha and loses his innocence' story and doing it worse each time.

This thread has too much Gundam in it.

    -doesn't like Gundam-
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    -has no opinion on Gundam-

    -has never seen any Gundam-
  • You can change. You can.
I only watched one of the nineties series. Don't remember much about it except it sucking.
  • Gundam is awesome.  Though, I base this on only watching the first movie trilogy, Zeta, and Char's Counterattack (and 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket).  Dunno how any non-UC Gundam series are.

    ^^Wing most likely. Wing sucked.

I repeat, this thread has too much Gundam, not enough zombie.
  • You can change. You can.
    Deal with the derail, child.

Also, yeah, just found out that it is Wing. I remember it being pretty boring and with uninteresting characters, although if you honestly asked me to tell you anything beyond that, I couldn't.

    --shrug--

make of that what you willl.

    Don't call be child, fgt.
  • You can change. You can.
I won't call "be" child then.

    >Watched Gundam Wing
    >Not a fujoshi

    HAHAHAHA
  • Yeah. Why DO I have to deal with that stupid Yaoi fandom that LOVES to take everything my favorite anime characters do out of context?
