Highschool of The Dead

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
What annoys me is that if it weren't for the heavy fanservice element the show has it would be a pretty solid zombie show.

I think I've stated that I'm actually one of those evil deviants that enjoys fanservice so it should say something that this show was too much for me. While I didn't mind the character-establishing ones, the fact that the animators have to find every contrivance they can to shoehorn in another panty shot. (I've never gotten why these are supposed to be sexy) It's also really the only point at which the show has any inconsistencies since one episode has one of the female characters be rather blase about decency taboos and then be rather bothered by having her bra shown a couple episodes later.

It's a shame because the dynamic of the harem anime archetypes in a zombie apocalypse is rather well-realized, though that might be because it appeals to me personally. Yeah, let's see that bitch Kagome tsun-tsun with two dozen flesh-eating horrors on her ass. The fact that the characters all seem to have some level of fucked-up would make them interesting if the camera could focus on their faces for half a second.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    I agree.

I really enjoyed just about every element of the show that wasn't the painfully omnipresent fanservice.

Most of the time I was able to look past it and just enjoy it as a zombie show, but dear god there was just so much
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
HSotD is the only show ever shown by my school's anime club that I couldn't last through the first episode without getting bored and walking off.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I actually felt things moved too fast in the pilot. We didn't really get a proper frame for the relationships, except for the nerd and tsundere.
  • So the characters can be referred to by their single character traits?
  • I like zombie-stuff too.

    >Watch, half of it fanservice I don't even like.

-__-, Yeah, no, sorry, just no.

Well they're not just tsunderes of whatever. They've got fucked up psychoses and such. I just can't remember their names because they're long and me brain no work.

Also, any character in any piece of fiction can be referred to by archetypes.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
The artist seems to make no distinction from "flat" to " freakishly big". Seriously, the way the girls are drawn are just...ugh.
  • You can change. You can.
So the characters can be referred to by their single character traits?

Dude, I can do this with Hamlet. Look.

    The Tortured Son.

This doesn't make them less deeper.

Yeah, I doubt I could read the manga because of it.

Generally I can ignore it when it's not fanservicing up (which as we covered is almost never)

Honestly, the best character to me is the nerd, mostly because him seeing the apocalypse as an opportunity to cut loose and let out his psychotic resentment and aggression issues is actually a pretty good take.

^^Also one of the better characters, surprisingly.
  • Highschool of the Dead is about zombies, so it probably sucks anyway.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Shut your whore mouth, Dyre.
  • Malkavian relates with the psychopath!

    Everybody take cover!
  • You can change. You can.
love your criteria and how wrong it is.

    Hirano was the best character.

Alice was second, partly because she wasn't fanservicing all the time.

Lots of zombie stuff is awesome.
  • "Highschool of the Dead is about zombies, so it probably sucks anyway."

Plants vs Zombies. Your argument is null.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I honestly think Hirano would have been a better protagonist since the only really noteworthy characteristic of the protagonist was his using of the other character and it would have been just as believable for him to do it.

"Highschool of the Dead is about zombies, so it probably sucks anyway."

Shaun of the Dead. Your argument is heresy.
  • Shaun of the Dead was a really good movie.  But most zombie-related media released recently hasn't been particularly impressive.  Admittedly, though, it's mostly that I'm kind of sick of zombies since there's just been so much of them in the past few years.

Eh, we could do this endless. Point is, zombies are cool, regardless of how much they have been run to the ground.

    ^Thought so.

Most anything-related media isn't very good. Sturgeon's law, bro.

^I still like zombies, despite nerds' best effort to ruin them.

I don't think any piece of fiction should be dismissed on the grounds that there has been a large upset of the genre it is based in being released before it.
  • ^ Well, fair enough.  It's mostly a matter of, like, when I see that some new thing has zombies in it, my first instinct is to think of it as being a shitty cash-in on a fad.  And, well, that's probably true in most cases.  Though, yeah, I shouldn't immediately assume everything is like that.

Considering how this is really only one of like three zombie-related things from Japan in the last ten years I know of, I doubt it.

Though, the fanservice aspect of it could be.

^^Yep. It's all right to not be interested in something, but not so much to make blind assumptions about stuff you haven't watched (and yes, I am aware that my first post in this thread makes me a hypocrite in this regard).
  • but not so much to make blind assumptions about stuff you haven't watched

To be fair, I actually did watch the first episode of Highschool of the Dead... >.>

  • You can change. You can.
What did you tell me about first episodes and never ever ever judging a series by them, DYRE?
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
I've read the manga, and still follow it, whenever it adds a new chapter, but I haven't watched the anime. I'd watch it, when I have nothineg else to see. Although the fanservice is pretty blatant, I am less annoyed by it, and more amazed at how much do they cram in.
