Silver Surfer fans, I got some questions

So the other day I was watching the movie Crimson Tide, and there's a part where two of the sub's crew get into a fight. It later turns out they were fighting over whose version of Silver Surfer was better: Kirby's or... Mobius? Who the eff is Mobius and when did his run begin? Secondly, I caught an episode of the mid-90s Silver Surfer cartoon where the Surfer was on this planet where they had invented a dream generator because reality sucked so much, but in the end they had to turn it on Thanos... so, okay, fill me in: who is Thanos, why does he go around destroying planets in a flying skull-shaped rock, and why did turning the dream generator on him make him see this chick with a flaming green skull? Third: Would all these questions be answered just by buying a few volumes of the Marvel Masterworks and reading them? Fourth, partially related question: Anyone but me think the Fantastic Four are phenomenally underrated?

Comments

  • One: Jean Giraud, aka Moebius is an artist who did a two part mini series based on the Silver Surfer in 1988, alongside Stan Lee.

Two: Thanos is Marvel's answer to Darkseid. He's a universal conqueror who wants all life to bow to him. As for Flamey Skull, that would be Death. Yeah, Thanos is in love with Death and that love kinda fuels a lot of the things he does.

Three: Probably not, but you should do it anyway.

Four: Hmm, I dunno about that. I mean Ben Grimm is in the New Avengers, people tout Susan as one of the most powerful metas in the Marvel Universe and Reed Richards can't walk into a chemist's without a parade of fanboys (and Johnny's dead so he doesn't matter). But I suppose, as a group, they kinda are.

I meant "overrated" in the sense that most IRL fans tend to think of them as the "boring" superheroes. I know a lot of people who love Spidey, Batman and whoever else, but have absolutely zero interest in the Fantastic Four.

But to be honest, the Fantastic Four are some of the superheroes who actually still entertain me. The cartoon episode where Psychoman turned Susan into a villain named Malice was one of the few american cartoons that actually had very interesting uses of rather mundane powers.
  • Oh well in that case I agree.
