    There are plenty of free (as in, actually, literally free, as in, don't make you pay for extra features to make the game playable / fun) MMOs that are loads of fun.

    I first learned about it through a dating sim.

    This is why I'm looking forward to Firefall.  It's a free-to-play FPS/TPS MMO that looks like a lot of fun.  It has microtransactions, but the only things you can buy with them are cosmetic items, so everyone is on a level playing field whether they pay or not.

    The MMO I'm most looking forward to is Guild Wars 2. Free-to-play, but on that scale? Quite impressive.

    I'll also try The Old Republic.

    ^My point is that no game is worth $1000.

    I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 most as well.  It's not quite free to play, though, I think you still have to buy the box.

    Best truly free MMO I've played is Mabinogi, since it has systems in place to reduce grind.

    The only MMO I play is Spiral Knights, and that's on and off.

     I actually played WoW for a while and got to level forty, but I stopped after I couldn't stand the grinding any longer. It's too bad, it seems like the game gets really fun at maximum levels, storming dragon caves and such, but the grind isn't worth it, in my opinion.

    I'll probably try out Old Republic though.

    I tried playing Spiral Knights and it seems a bit unintuitive and I haven't really enjoyed it much.

    Eden Eternal seems to be better and more intuitive.

    BTW I just found out today from ads on TVT that WoW is going to be f2p up to level 20.

    Funnily enough, level 20 is two levels higher than the point at which I got bored enough that I decided not to keep playing.

    But my problem with WOW was less grinding and more "where'd all the interesting things to do vanish to between levels 14-18?"
