It's "shield" I was stuck on. Since the longsword is the favourite of the German fightmasters and that disqualifies you from shield usage courtesy of the techniques requiring two hands. Although many manuals have a single sword and buckler section, the larger parts of the manuals are longsword teachings.

In swordplay, going without a shield for the sake of weilding a more versatile, powerful and long-reaching weapon could be seen as wisdom. It seems safe sex is actually more subtle than swordplay.
