Magic: The Gathering (Feck yerr unmarked set spoilers!)

I'm getting tired of seeing things under spoilers in the main thread back on TvTropes and I think some of us have been waiting for an excuse for a dedicated MTG thread here, so I thought I'd try killing two Squadron Hawks with one Pyroclasm.

So, how about those transformational cards? They should explain the rules in a new article in about 10 minutes. I'm really wondering how they're going to deal with shuffling the cards properly and such.

The Aeon's torn from Zendikar was far more awesome.

Emrakul? Uh, sure, it's a pretty fun and playable card and maybe the best creature ever made for "cheating" into play, but it's not like being a colorless non-artifact creature or having annihilator made it all that interesting from a mechanical standpoint compared to cards with two faces.

The article is up, by the way.

I am still stuck in the Worldwake/Zendi set so I don't know of any new cards beyond the Titans from 11.
  • You can change. You can.
I really dislike the Eldrazi from a gameplay perspective. Their mana cost is way too high for it to be played on regular and if you get it out, it's pretty much game over.

    Also, fucking Annhilator

I do like them in EDH because the scale of the whole thing (Game, I mean) means that it's easier to deal with the fuckers (Hinder is your friend.)
  • After Zendikar block, the most prominent deck in Standard was "Caw Blade". It used and still uses Squadron Hawk and the swords from Scars block, generally in a U/W aggro-control deck. It was so powerful it led to the bans of JTMS and Stoneforge Mystic from the format. There's also a card called Deceiver Exarch that had an infinite combo with Splinter Twin. I have a reasonably good deck that's based around it, it's also a notable archetype.

Oh, and after this new set, Zendikar and the decks I mentioned are going to rotate out of Standard.

I wish green had a counter. Eldrazi can slay anything.

I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I could find a card in green that murders Eldrazi...

Oh, there's Stingerfling Spider for Emrakul. There's also Deadly Recluse and Thornweald Archer. Of course, you still have to deal with the annihilator ability...

Really though, I think green's best counter to Eldrazi is to play them.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't really like monocolor except for Red. And that's because motherfucking Jaya Ballard will fuck your shit up. :D:D:D

I haven't seen a Caw Blade archetypical deck in action. Hurm.
  • Oh god, I played one of them pre-banning. It's not easy to deal with, but that's stating the obvious.

I could load up a decklist if you want to try playing against what it was like in its heyday.
  • You can change. You can.
Just lemme see what it looks like. I'm not really in the mood to play tonight.
  • 4 ofs of JTMS, Mystic, Squawks, singletons of Batterskull, some swords, Celestial Colonnade and whatever slots are left over go to counterspells and whatever else you want.

Let me find a real list, though.
  • You can change. You can.
Fucking bunch of Gideon Juras. This is indeed a broken deck. It'd need more swords, in my opinion, but as it is? It works greatly.
  • Well, there's a reason that the deck inspired the first Standard bannings since I think the last Mirrodin block, and after that was (again, I think) still the most successful deck.
  • Those two-faced cards look unwieldy, to be honest. Good thing there are opaque sleeves.

Hurm. Is there a way for me to see the different archetypes and decklist examples? Like a list or an article.

^Looks pretty easy to me. And with the sleeves, you can still draft. So it all works out in the end.
  • a little muffled
I almost never use opaque sleeves when I draft. The checkmark cards look kinda annoying, but I guess I'll be stuck with them...
  • You can change. You can.
I've read the article and I don't really understand the checkmark cards. >_>

It's probably cuz the article is in shitty Spanish.
  • a little muffled
Basically you use the checkmark card as a proxy for a two-sided card when it's in a hidden zone.
  • I wonder if you're allowed to hide the flip cards that are in your deck in a deckbox or something. Kinda hope so. I also wonder if this will have weird interactions with cards that have to do with Morph, like Ixidron. Maybe I should order a playset while it's still a bulk rare...

  • a little muffled
It is impossible to turn a double-faced card face down. Ixidron does nothing to them.

Although the physical action is the same, transforming is not the same as being turned face down. This means that a double-faced card that transforms will not, for example, triggerUnblinking Bleb. Double-faced cards are always face up; they are never face down. If an effect (say, Ixidron) tries to turn a double-faced card face down, nothing happens.

    Ooh, guess I missed that.
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
Ooh, exciting! Good thing I have a lot of opaque sleeves.

    Has friends besides tanks now
I'm soon gonna get to work on making an EDH deck with Animar, Soul of Elements as the General that focuses on artifact creatures, using cheap ones like Memnite and Ornithopter to drastically speed up the arrival of much harder-hitting artifact creatures. The deck will also include Aluren, though at some point it might become redundant.

Any good green/blue/red cards to recommend? I've only really looked at the creatures so far.

EDIT: So apparently duplicate cards aren't allowed in EDH? That's kind of annoying.

And as for this rule, "Cards in a deck may not have any colours in their identity which are not shared with the commander of the deck. ", does this mean that a General who doesn't have a colorless cost can't use colorless creatures?
  • You can change. You can.
It's the point. Elder Dragon Highlander

Animar is indeed a good general.

Anyway, have you got cards to make Animar invincible (Champion's Helm and Darksteel Plate come to mind)

Also, do you have a deck list?

  • Has friends besides tanks now
I haven't even started it yet; it's still in the conceptual phase.

And that would be a good idea; I'd hate to let that sort of advantage go to waste.

And when you say "It's the point", which part of my post are you referring to?
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I just played Magic a couple days ago for the first time in years with my friend, with my old deck.

It was this one, with a few cards added in.
  • Duplicate cards being disallowed. Highlander means "there can be only one" of each.
  • You can change. You can.
And when you say "It's the point", which part of my post are you referring to?

Sorry, shoulda clarify. I meant the no repeats bit. EDH was basically a Highlander joke (There can only be one) that some fans expanded from the Legendary rule and made a format around of. Then Wizards of the Coast saw that the format was popular and decided to support it with the Commander expansion.

It was this one, with a few cards added in.

    ewwww, monoblack.
