People who dismiss entire mediums out of hand.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Anime, books, comics, movies older 1987, you name it...

Not only do those kinds of people frustrate me with their idiocy, but when it comes down to it, they're cheating themselves.

  • GEE WHAT CAUSED THIS THREAD.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Observant as always, Madam.
  • Pasting what Norm said in another thread:

Yes, it is okay to dismiss an entire genre out of hand. You know why? Because people can form their impressions of quality based on just about anything, and sometimes the important subset of "anything" intersects with genre-defining traits or tropes so common in the genre that they might as well be defining traits.

I like (some) anime. I also like (some) heavy metal, science fiction, bad math jokes, and Mikhail Bulgakov. It's fine if you don't.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    And...this thread isn't about genres.
  • Note that animé was used as an example of a "genre", which is mentioned in the OP.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Except anime isn't a genre. It's a medium.
  • I know what caused this thread.

    Sorry Tzetze!
  • Then replace the word in your head. Genre -> medium. Not too hard.
  • "but when it comes down to it, they're cheating themselves."

Fictional media is not a need.

  • Anime isn't really a medium, and "movies older than 1987" certainly isn't a medium, so this thread isn't really about media either.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^^Except that's unfathomably stupid. Making broadstroke dismissals like that leads to being poorly-rounded.

^^Certainly, but it can enrich your life. If you eat at a place that has lower quality food than another place that costs the same, you're cheating yourself.

^The movies things is more about a common arbitrary cutoff. If you prefer, put in people who don't watch TV,
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Some people are stupid. Stop the presses.
  • I just quoted the thing. The way I see it, I can't stand certain things, you can't stand certain things, everyone is that way. It's not stupid to be that way.
  • Define "quality". Health benefit? Resource consumption? Taste? Placebo effect?
  • Aren't you doing the same thing, by dismissing anyone who dismisses things?

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^^Now you're just splitting hairs.

^^^Sure. There are things I don't like. I dislike Rom Coms and Cop shows, but I recognize the appeal and quality they have and don't dismiss them all out of hand simply because they aren't my cup of tea.

^I'm making a judgement of them, certainly. Dismissal is a rather strong word.
  • Actually, it was a bit of fridge logic.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^That's also splitting hairs. =P

On a related note, a person I know once advised I throw out my TV because of things like Jersey Shore.

That would be akin to throwing out my library for Twilight coming out.
  • ^ They've been saying stuff like that for decades:

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Oh yeah, I know. It was stupid when done with Rock N Roll, it was stupid when done with TV, and it's stupid for being done with video games.

That said, only watching tv and not reading is bad, but so is only reading. It's best to be well-rounded.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Of course, some of the things present in Network have become depressingly accurate, but to throw your entire medium out because of one bad work is idiotic.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^Right. Don't mistake the message for the messenger.
  • The medium is the message.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I'm fairly sure the message of Doctor Strangelove was 'Mutually Assured Destruction is a bad idea' and not 'MOVIE'.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Actually, the message of Dr. Strangelove is "The fate of the world is in the hands of impotent, ignorant power-mongers! Isn't that hilarious?"
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^Can't it be both?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Well, the first is more the message of Red Alert, the book it's based on.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
You know what I'd like to see? A cross-media project like Shadows of The Empire or .Hack that actually worked.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
Sometimes dismissals though are fairly justified.

"I'm not gonna get a Virtual Boy because there's no games on it I want." for example.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Everyone knows what caused this thread about but me.  :(
