This is a tree that grows sawblades (which it sheds frequently) as leaves, in a swirly, screw-thread fashion, and produces fruits that look vaguely like pineapples from a distance.
The fruit is edible and is used to make various desserts.
(They aren't native, but also not considered invasive as far as I know.)

Actually I had a very similar first impression. Looks like those folks were illuminated from below, like by a fire (-y cross).
Fun fact: the guy in the middle is Polish (I don't know of the other two). He's also the kind of guy who, when accused of being a neo-Nazi, retorts that he can't be since he doesn't agree with the notion that it's the Germans who are the master race.
