(Not my personal experience, but I can imagine it.)
I always get the distinct sense of this seeming suspicious coming from a young adult man, which I am. I'm probably overestimating the feeling, but I'd rather not underestimate it.
But, anyways, the point I'm trying to get to is just to use a basket in general. Err on the side of caution, even if it is for just one item (of course as if I'm going to learn this lesson).

Also I happen to live next to a big box store that sells groceries so I literally just walk to it. Have also walked to the bank, to the various fast food places down the road, to the bookstore, and so on.
The pros of living next to a mall are that you can walk everywhere for this stuff.
The cons are that these are all chain stores and there's also no nice nature trails anywhere nearby and everywhere is just roads and cars so it's not exactly the safest street-crossings.
