Jobhunting

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Arrrggh it is so incredibly depressing :(

Firstly PRO RATA as I'm looking at educational settings, PRO RATA comes up a lot.
It basically says 'You see that pay we put up there on the advert? Yeah don't get your hopes up it'll be nowhere near that.'
The worst is a good looking wage even with the PRO RATA tag, and then finding in the full advert it is for 6 hours a week.

SUCH MISDIRECTION WHY PUT THE FULL WAGE IN SUCH A CASE WHY NOT JUST PUT THE HOURLY WAGE?

Secondly finding an amazing looking job, checking the school's website to see about the Person Specification.
Then finding out it is a catholic school with a 'mission statement' that makes it clear that whilst it would be illegal to openly turn someone away for not being catholic, that that is exactly what they would do.

Why would a Catholic (I assume you mean big-C Catholic) school turn people away for being Catholic?

Their mission statement a file which is linked to their job specification is pretty heavy handed.
Whilst it is illegal to not hire people of certain religions, it still happens with the Catholic (big C) schools but not overtly.

You mean turn people away for NOT being Catholic?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Yes, exactly.
  • I am surprised this thread was not made by an American.

    I think.

    Why is that?
  • Because I come across so much more bitching about how it's hard to get jobs and how the economy sucks in America than anywhere else.

Well I'm not sure about the rest of the jobs, I'm looking at education/support jobs.
  • Well, Good Luck Ian!

And close the door while you have neighbors over.

    Thanks and what.
  • Its only polite.

I am hoping to get this data processing job. I've been working as a temp for two-years and I really need benefits! Until my journalist job can actually make me a living (like that is ever going to happen), being a cube slave is how I will be getting by. I hate this economy (just saying).

I hope you can find a good job, Ian. Are you doing anything for a living right now?

    Good Luck for jobs guys.

    Nope, I'm unfortunately unemployed.
  • Good luck you two.

I used to say that I knew C++ on my resume.  Changed it after realizing that there wasn't a realistic prospect of me actually learning C++ to some practically-useful extent anytime soon.  Sure I can Google things and ask computer-savvy friends or crowdsource but that's just not the same.

I recently sent off my resume to a friend who founded and works at a local computers/networking company.  I was worrying all through lunch and I was so relieved when I discovered that the resume I sent him didn't show that.

That said, it says I know audio/video editing.  BRB downloading and learning Audacity quickly.

I know some video editing too and I was asked by an employment agent to take that off my resume.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Why did they ask that?

Also, come to think of it, I no longer have access to Windows Movie Maker on Windows 7.  That means I need to find and learn a replacement.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
They claimed that since I was going for an office job that the presence of video editing on my skilled-based resume would confuse potential employers.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
...?  What would they confuse it to be?
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
*shrugs* I have no idea. I would think most employers to be smart enough to not be thrown off by one or two non-office related skills. I did as the agent asked, however, and made my resume more office centered. It still didn't get me that job. I ended up getting my current temp job because my  (now) mother-in-law vouched for me.
  • I haven't had to make a resume yet.  Also, I've heard that something like 80% of jobs are achieved through networking.
