This is pretty obvious in analogy with two other crimes: murder and robbery. Now, robbery IS usually about money, and as we might have guessed, when we look at robbery figures we see that most robbers rob people they don't know. After all, why rob someone you know; if you need money, they probably also need money, and even if they have money they could identify you much easier. Much better to go to a rich neighborhood and break in a stranger's window.
On the other hand, there's no obvious "stranger motive" that murder could be about; murder is almost always about what the people who talk about rape call "power" but which is really more "desire to cause harm". So as might be expected when we look at murder statistics we see relatively few murderers murder people they don't know at all; usually murder victims knew the person who murdered them.
Which of these patterns do rape statistics look like? Surprise surprise, they look almost exactly like the murder statistics! And if you think about it this is fairly obvious; people who desperately need sex tend to hire a prostitute or call a fuck-buddy or even just masturbate rather than stalking the streets, because most people do not want to go out of their way to harm a stranger. Instead most rapes are committed by people who know the victim and want to cause her OR HIM pain, for whatever reason. Or else sometimes they are purely about power, in the sense of "I'm gonna have sex with you and there's nothing you can do to stop me neener neener".
