The American covers of the Spice & Wolf novels.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Yes, yes. "Before I even clicked on it..." Give yourself a cookie.

Now, obviously there's the covers. Ignoring that godawful cover the first novel had which was pretty much a naked chick whose face was obscured, the others have a pretty bad 'photorealistic' aspect to them. Also, all of the novels do the obscured face thing, giving the impression that Yen Press told the artist that Holo was a butterface. Actually, the whole face-obscuring thing is common among fantasy paperbacks. I guess there's some psychological/marketing reason for it. The cover is also pretty obviously intended to make the novels marketable to the non-weeaboo crowd, but you know what would help? Not only putting them in the goddamn manga section! Surely then, perhaps other readers might look at them!  It's ridiculously poorly thought out.

I also suspect that with their dust jacket solution that gives both covers, the main reason for the raised price is to justify their contract with an artist nobody likes.

I was really pissed off that I got the first one too late to get the dust jacket.

Then I never bothered to read any of the others. Oh well.
  • I just take the jacket off and buy it without it. The store hasn't gotten angry or anything, so.........
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
What bothers me about it is that there's a clear and easy-to-follow logic to it. It's a western fantasy series, and could capture a market outside the niche weeaboo market with a different cover. it's just so horribly mismanaged, not to mention that people put it in the manga section anyways so what's the point?
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
You know what bugs me more?

    The body pillows.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
That's endemic to otaku culture and isn't limited to Spice & Wolf, though.

Also, not hurting anybody blah blah lip service.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
At least you get the novels. I can consider myself lucky that the manga gets released in Germany (which reminds me that I haven't finished the first one and by now the third came out).
  • Only the third has come out here too.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
The fourth actually came out very recently and is in my to-read stack as I type.
  • You can change. You can.
    Blah blah mocking Malk

    Relevant:

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I'd rather have the non anime one.
  • You can change. You can.
I'd rather have none of them, to be honest. the anime one is a bit too...brown, and the photo realistic one just sucks.
  • I didn't even know this was an anime thing, because I remember seeing that cover in the fantasy section. Odd.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Curiously, the one that covers eyes...well, makes it so you don't have to use animé eyes.
  • I don't get it.
  • You can change. You can.
Two different covers, one sucks, the other one does, but Malk likes it.

What is it that you don't get?
  • They both look somewhat equal in quality to me. Just different art styles.
  • You can change. You can.
    I don't know, I find the secon'd photrealitism sickening.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
I'd prefer the anime one. I know that comes as big surprise, but it's true.
  • a little muffled
I quite like the Japanese cover.
  • The second one just bothers me because they aren't really showing someone beyond some vague shape.

    Ian: ALL MY HATE

Juan: There's a lot of brown on the cover, yes, but it's different shades of brown with good contrasting colors. Also, fuck you I like brown haid.

AHR: It's just bad. The washed-out colors, the obscured face, the dumb-looking grin, not to mention the fact that it looks like soft-core porn, all make it unappealing.

Snowbull: That's actually somewhat heartening. I just wish it had a better cover. The irony is that the Haruhi novels have much a better alternate cover that I could see appealing to the YA market, but Haruhi is a lot more entrenched in anime pop culture whereas I could see Spice & Wolf getting a solid foothold with American fantasy readers.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
Is this actually a manga, or is it just a novel that happens to be from Japan?

Cuz if it's Japanese it must be anime amiritegaiz.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
It's a novel from Japan that later got a manga and anime adaptation.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
    *shrug*

If it's just a book, I don't see why the cover matters.

If it was the manga and they put the other cover on, I could understand, but it's not.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I don't mind so much putting on a different cover. I endorse the idea. It's just that they're really bad.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
Novel covers tend to be pretty terrible in general, with very few exceptions.

Just gonna throw that out there.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I fail to see how poor quality products existing excuses releasing a poor quality product.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
Because standards are low, and therefore, most of the output is low-quality too.

I'm not trying to excuse anything, just explaining. Why would I be?

    You can change. You can.
^^You know, if you didn't like Spice & Wolf, we'd be the bestest friends, Malk.

^Well, we know why, but it doesn't stop it from being bad.

@MyFireworksDoesYours: It's not a graphic novel, but it does have illustrations.
