The American covers of the Spice & Wolf novels.
Yes, yes. "Before I even clicked on it..." Give yourself a cookie.
Now, obviously there's the covers. Ignoring that godawful cover the first novel had which was pretty much a naked chick whose face was obscured, the others have a pretty bad 'photorealistic' aspect to them. Also, all of the novels do the obscured face thing, giving the impression that Yen Press told the artist that Holo was a butterface. Actually, the whole face-obscuring thing is common among fantasy paperbacks. I guess there's some psychological/marketing reason for it. The cover is also pretty obviously intended to make the novels marketable to the non-weeaboo crowd, but you know what would help? Not only putting them in the goddamn manga section! Surely then, perhaps other readers might look at them! It's ridiculously poorly thought out.
I also suspect that with their dust jacket solution that gives both covers, the main reason for the raised price is to justify their contract with an artist nobody likes.

Then I never bothered to read any of the others. Oh well.
The body pillows.
Also, not hurting anybody blah blah lip service.
Juan: There's a lot of brown on the cover, yes, but it's different shades of brown with good contrasting colors. Also, fuck you I like brown haid.
AHR: It's just bad. The washed-out colors, the obscured face, the dumb-looking grin, not to mention the fact that it looks like soft-core porn, all make it unappealing.
Snowbull: That's actually somewhat heartening. I just wish it had a better cover. The irony is that the Haruhi novels have much a better alternate cover that I could see appealing to the YA market, but Haruhi is a lot more entrenched in anime pop culture whereas I could see Spice & Wolf getting a solid foothold with American fantasy readers.
Cuz if it's Japanese it must be anime amiritegaiz.
If it's just a book, I don't see why the cover matters.
If it was the manga and they put the other cover on, I could understand, but it's not.
Just gonna throw that out there.
I'm not trying to excuse anything, just explaining. Why would I be?
