The hate smokers seem to get.

I'm not a smoker, but it seems to me that they have to deal with a lot of people's shit. For example, I just saw on the news today that they want to put graphic pictures of how smokers could end up on boxes of cigarettes. That strikes me as kind of offensive, and I'm pretty hard to offend. It'st not like we put up signs showing obese people and the potential health problems that comes with in front of McDonald's so why do we do that to smokers? It's their choice, and as annoying a habit it is for other people, it's not like their assaulting you with a knife for their next box of cigarettes. I'm just saying, we could use the money used to tell smokers to stop smoking a lot more productively.

It's here in New York, I should go look for a link.
  • >It'st not like we put up signs showing obese people and the potential health problems that comes with in front of McDonald's.

    Give it time.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
There are pictures of the food they serve at McDonalds.
Surely that counts as a warning.

Big Tobacco won the suit, with a judge ruling only the federal government could issue such warnings

    ^^ I hope so.

It's not like most people really want to limit smoker's rights when they don't annoy them.

Yeah, that's true, I just kinda wish that I didn't see commercials against smoking all over the place, doesn't help that my mom seems to pull the "Think of the children" card all the time. She doesn't like smokers so maybe that's what makes the whole smoker thing annoy me more.

Well there are health issues associated, and they are more extreme/visible/whatever than your comparison to mcdonalds food.

    Hence the health warnings.

I don't hate smokers, I hate the nausea and headaches they induce in me every time they light one up. And of course they have to be at every bus stop I happen to be at.

    And they're douchebags.

You'd think they'd be considerate enough to stop smoking after we explain man many times that my sister is suffering due to her really bad allergies. On an 8 hour flight.

Yeah, screw smokers. You can go kill yourselves but keep it away from everyone else.

  • Don't you know? Tobacco companies manufacture DEEEEAAAAAATTTHHHHHHH!!!

    /largehamvoice
  • The Government only keeps them around because they make shit tons of money of smokers.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Speaking of which, why the fuck is marijuana still illegal?
  • You can change. You can.
I smoke. But I always smoke alone or with people who are either smoking or don't mind me doing so.

    Also.

I don't hate smokers, I hate the nausea and headaches they induce in me every time they light one up. And of course they have to be at every bus stop I happen to be at.

    Lol generalizations.
  • I don't like smoking, and I don't think people should smoke. But I don't hate smokers.

I'm not going to be someone who preaches against smoking, but I definitely lose respect for people who act like they are being repressed for their smoking habits. I do not know how rational it is, but I feel that when people act like a victim, they become more determined to do the thing they perceive to be victimized for, and I dislike that.

I was being facetious with the douche-bags remark, i'm hardly one for actual generalizations. I'm just bitter. ANd smoke makes me sick.
  • Turkey used to let smokers...smoke in mall cafeterias.

Try tolerating that, AC-moose. I barely could.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
We have those graphic images already here.

Everyone smoked in Egypt, I was there for 2.5 years AHR, I think I get your point.

I don't feel like I'm victimized. I'm aware of the dangers of smoking and as well of the fact that some people don't like it.

I don't smoke near people who don't like me doing so. Same way I don't run around putting my car's radio at the top of its mechanical lungs playing heavy metal. As that would be annoying.

@OP: I think the main idea behind putting these on cigarette boxes isn't to harass smokers, but actually to prevent people from becoming smokers. They already do this in most other countries, America being one of the only ones that doesn't enforce this yet.

And I sincerely hope they enforce it here, by the way.

Just shut the hell up and ignore it you wuss.

That's the kind of attitude I dislike, actually. Both alcohol and smoking kill the ever living shit out of you, I don't see why they should put those labels only in cigarretes.

I'd prefer it much more if neither of them had them and instead we simply educated people to tell them what they both do and to make a choice for themselves. I'd prefer if society didn't make a stand against the things it legalize.

Yeah, after my uncle gave one of his daughters respiratory problems while she was growing up and is currently causing his family immense grief via his excruciating emphysema, I gotta say I'm less sympathetic than I probably should be about smoking.

^ If anything, we do considerably more about alcohol than tobacco, what with all the under the influence laws and such.

^^Big whoopde-doo; education isn't enough here and there like that.

And in any case, legalizing something isn't the same as saying "WOOHOOO,
    BOOZE AND CIGARETTES FOR EEEEEVERYBODY!!!"
. A lot of people do have a
serious problem, or are at risk to start one, and thus would gladly accept
such a warning. And it's not society deciding for them, you can keep on
smoking as usual, irregardless of the ima
    ge.

To be fair, I was thinking more around here in Colombia and I'm thinking more about the packages/commercials rather than the law. I mean, alcohol is pretty glamorized around here. And it's not exactly outlawed or anything. I mean, the law basically says "If you're not hurting anyone while drinking and someone responisble (AKA an adult, in case you're a minor) is looking over you, then there's no prob.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is not that the society should go all "LOL IS ALLOWED, THEREFORE EVERYONE SHOULD DO IT". but that instead of going "Smoking is bad and smokers should feel bad" it should say "Here, smoking tends to cause respiratory problems and secondary smoking damages the people around you. Do you wish to continue?"

    Also:

And it's not society deciding for them, you can keep on
smoking as usual, irregardless of the image.

Yeah, but why there should be a bad image for smokers? I mean, if smoking (AKA the act) is damaging, I'd understand looking down on them if they inflict that damage on others, but if the don't, then why bother doing so?

The bad image is to discourage young people from becoming smokers. Yes, they can be educated and all that jazz, but doing so will only accomplish so much. Having that picture on there could enable someone to reconsider. The same goes for people who have been smoking for a long time and are trying to quit.

    It's to encourage thought.

  • You can change. You can.
Yeah, but my problem is that people shouldn't be discouraged from doing things, they should be told the consequences of their acts and decide how to act.
