I'm strangely attracted to churches

Something about them just captivates me. There's a Catholic church a few blocks from my home, and I can't pass it without wondering what's going on inside or wanting to go in.

A few questions to all of the Catholic tropers here (assuming there are any other than Ed): Is it considered inappropriate for someone who's not Catholic to sit in on a session / mass (not sure what it's called), and what would it entail? Is one expected to dress formally? Do you need to bring a bible?

It's cause you wanna get married.

I've sat in at a Catholic mass once, it was the day of my (heavily religious) auntie's funeral but we were unable to attend, so we went to Church. It's okay to go, but very rude (if you're not Catholic) to take communion. We dressed formally, it wasn't superduper wedding formal, more...60th birthday party formal (if that makes any sense), and no you don't need a Bible.

    M-m-m-m-m-m-m-married?! Say what?

Anywho, thanks! Just to be clear (since Google is intent on keeping me from knowing what communion is), communion is the wine and bread, right?
  • There isn't much wine and bread though.
  • Alrighty then. Thank you!

Just one more quick question, what's up with the singing? Do all churches do that, and is it mandatory?
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Most churches do it, and it isn't mandatory.

Although you might want to at least stand when others do, just for respect.

Is one expected to dress formally?

Not really, just dress nice enough not to look like a slob.

Yeah, just dress decently.  People won't object to you coming in, say, jeans and a plaid shirt.

Also, taking communion isn't that interesting.  And the wafers are bland.
  • I'm fairly certain that for Catholic churches, you do NOT take communion unless you are a member in good standing of the church.

Well, they don't actually have some sort of "Detect Catholicism" device, so they simply ask nicely.
