Directing vs Acting: THE HOLLYWOOD BATTLE BITCHES

edited 2011-06-11 23:07:51 in General
$80+ per session
My friend ( who is also helping the same theatre productions as me) and I are arguing which is harder to become famous for. I said Directing.

    a little muffled
My first thought was directing, but thinking about it, probably acting. There are more famous actors than famous directors, but a movie typically only has one director and a lot of actors. The stars are probably more famous than the director (unless it's James Cameron or something) but the majority of the actors? Not so much.

That's true, Nyktos, but I still say Directors. I can name more actors that feature film directors.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
^ But there are a lot more actors in general, aren't there?

You'd need to figure out the ratio of famous:not famous directors and famous:not famous actors.
  • You can change. You can.
Actors. For every succesful actor there are three thousand billion waiters. Just sayin.

now, that's if we equate fame with success. Although they are hardly the same.
  • $80+ per session
I don't think we're equating fame with success. And if that is the case, I still say Directors, brah.
  • You can change. You can.
It depends on the time, then. I mean, if we're talking about the seventies, then you'd be wrong. But today? You're indeed right. This is mostly because studios don't care anymore about who's directing this days (This is an exaggeration, but when you get to it...yeah)
  • $80+ per session
I guess then that the future looks bleak for me as a prospective director, huh?
  • You can change. You can.
As I see it, times are changing. People like Cristopher Nolan are changing that, via producing and funding their own projects. Also, guys like Von Trier are breaking various rules that many people didn't think possible.

But, most importantly, fame is hardly something worth caring for. If it comes, it comes, but it's much more preferable to be succesful. People don't realize how hard it is to work on a film. Especially as a director. To be able to churn one (Especially your first one) is a challenge that most people back down from.
  • $80+ per session
Nolan is one of the modern directors I look up to the most.

    What has Von Trier done?
  • You can change. You can.
Yup, he is pretty amazing and I'd daresay that he's the best director of this generation and on par with Spielberg and Scorsese

Lars Von Trier has done this:

  • $80+ per session
    Can't see youtube on this.
  • $80+ per session
Interesting. I'll have to check it out sometime.

It's funny how you only here of directors who are very good, or very bad. Or known for a specfic style, or big budget flicks. Don't think it's always been like that.
  • You can change. You can.
It's always been like that. Same thing goes to actors.
  • $80+ per session
I don't think it's the same for actors honestly. Close, but not the same. Just think of how many actors you can name (that a normal person would know the name of) compared to directors.

This isn't animosity or anything. Just sayin'
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Three.

    Three actors or directors?
  • You can change. You can.
Just think of how many actors you can name (that a normal person would know the name of) compared to directors.

Under what criteria? Live, dead, modern, currently working?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    I can name three actors.

All. Well, done movies that have been in theaters.

    I recognize Will Smith?
  • You can change. You can.
I'm just gonna use "All" because the other one involves me doing research on theater beyond Shakespear and I don't feel like doing so:

Seth Rogan, Jesse Eisenberg, Amanda Bynes, Emma Stone, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Steve Carrell, Jim Carrey, Heath Ledger...
  • $80+ per session
I think it says something about me that I've heard of all those directors, but not some actors. To be fair though, you did say older actors.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
If Heath Ledger is the Joker I have heard of him.

Compare directors (without looking at Juan's list); M. Night Shamalayan, Christopher Nolan, Stephen Spielberg, Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Newell...

    You can change. You can.
Older awesomer actors. Lauren Bacall and Katharine Hepburn are pretty much what every female actress should aspire to be.

^You know, I just realized that TDK might be my favorite movie of all time and I didn't even mention a single member from that cast.
  • $80+ per session
I understand for Juan, but I'm surprised you can name so few actors.
