IJBM that IJBM was a cause of drama in the first place.

edited 2011-06-09 13:40:42 in General
One foot in front of the other, every day.
Why was this, again?

Was there a specific reason?

Even now, I consider the removal of IJBM silly. How much serious business actually went down?

IJBM wasn't the cause of drama. The posters were. /Thread.

Are you asking why it's perceived that it causes drama, or asking why it causes it? Because recent events point that the answer to the first question is because it's true.

Honestly, I'm disappointed about all the drama we've had recently. For the first few months I thought we could prove (at least to me) that we could behave and have our fun without being a drama factory.

Also, was this thread caused by this? Because I was about to post about that. It hurts.

I believe that the problem was that this time, we brough something that happened two months back. I wouldn't call it drama that happened today, so much as Chagen getting hit in the back of the head by a boomerang he threw some time ago.

^^ Yes, this thread was caused by that.

Obviously, IJBM caused drama, although all the drama I witnessed was reactions to IJBM rather than IJBM itself. At least when it was back at TvTropes.

Basically, I don't think IJBM was harmful in the first place, or even overly negative. Although, to be fair, I was part of the IJBM subculture as it was. So I might have glossed over a little.

You think it hurts you. Imagine what it's like for the mods.

For the first few months, barely any actual discussion was had. Really, this place behaved much alike TV Tropes in that sense: at first, controversy and disagreement was avoided through derails/shitposting, but when we (general we) decided to "take the kiddy gloves off", and discuss "serious" topics, drama ensued.

It hurts all of us, to be called a shit hole by the people we normally hanged out with, let alone some us admire.

^I think he's referring to the recent months, actually...I think.
  • Why shouldn't we self-moderate like that?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I guess being separated from the other website allows them to take a different perspective.

Kind of how we call Something Awful a site of neckbearded critics whenever This Troper is brought up.

And I like negativity. Just not overt bitching.
  • Why shouldn't we self-moderate like that?

I didn't say that we shouldn't (even if I rather we didn't), just that it's silly to think that this site would somehow be magically exempt from the problems that arise when trying to set up a discussion forum.

Two months back? You mean the thing about his fetfic? Because I don't think today's events had anything to do with that and everything to do with those comments at the FSTDT forums.

Unless the former put him in the mood to do the later, but we can't know that.

*Sigh* Maybe you're right. Feels even more disappointing now.

I am, though I think he knows this.

Edit: Damn, now I feel like crap for those times I cheered on things that ended in drama, or participated in it myself.

I thought the FSTDT forums thing was from two months back...

    Loser
I think to a certain extent that IJBM functioned as a scapegoat on TV Tropes and was deleted partially for that reason. I base that belief off of how some people seemed to talk about IJBM like it was a pit of depravity and trolling and such. I think one might argue that it was worse about trolling and harshness than many of the other subforums (at least in terms of hollers), but I think the degree of distaste for the subforum (even today as seen in the thread in question) is far higher than what I believe one could justify based on what actually happened in the subforum itself.

Still, I think that after the announcement that it would be deleted, activity in the subforum changed to almost resemble the caricature of it that other people described.

Also, I agree about the negative comments about IJBM II being hurtful even if they might not have been intended that way. I think we may need to avoid posting about IJBM II on TV Tropes, in order to stop that kind of discussion and avoid importing drama.

    ^I agree with everything.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
As far as I know, the problem is less with us posting about IJBM II and more with people who don't like it posting about it.

The third paragraph should work both ways. Especially if our plan is to generate some sort of indepedence.

Yeah, but they wouldn't have happened if Lithp and Miles11 didn't come here today, would it?

I don't really see any more drama than usual here.  Granted I missed whatever apparently happened with Chagen today, but that stuff aside we don't get much more than OTC on any given day and shitstorms happen about as often.
  • You can change. You can.
It's hardly that, but the fact that we're seen as nothing but an eternal shitstorm.
  • I'll admit I might have a rather strict definition of shitstorm, but if this is an eternal one then people are either frighteningly thin-skinned or have a severe allergy to shit.

It's a light drizzle at the most.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't think we even qualify, but most of the people over there simply believe on the word of mouth. And the word of mouth is bad. With most people thinking that every thread is a Chagen/Tnu/What have you thread or whatever.

Fast Eddie doesn't like complaining. IJBM always had that against it.
  • You can change. You can.
See, I don't mind that IJBM is not in the forums, it barely belonged there, what bugs me is how we're getting dissed by them. I normally wouldn't care, but these are people whose opinion I hold in high regard.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Not to mention that some of the most notable Tropers were regulars in IJBM v1.0.

IJBM being a scourge is mostly a history retcon.
  • You can change. You can.
    ^^ This too, actually.
  • Well, if we see someone diss it we'll simply show our support by saying we use it. If that lowers their opinion of us, so be it.
  • You can change. You can.
See, I can live with that, but I'm also bothered by the fact that OTC is having some serious issues that relate to how both sites are having moderation issues, but the staff won't listen because they want to think that IJBM never happened instead of learning from the mistakes that came with it.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
Alright, what happened here? I'm away a few days and suddenly Chagen and Vorpy are banned for some reason and people on TV Tropes exaggeratively badmouth not only IJBM 2, but the old IJBM too. In a thread that was actually about OTC.

Hell, the more I visit the TV Tropes forum, the more insufferable dicks there seem to be. At least my opinion about certain people sinks lower and lower.

    RE: Chagen and Vorpy:

    It started on this thread.

Chagen then made this thread. This thread fell under the import/export war rule, and Vorpy's posts violated both Rule 2 and Rule 4a, resulting in a ban.

If I understand, that is- I woke up in the middle of it.
