That I don't really know what's expected of me as a mod.

If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

First start experimenting with ROMs and see what you find easiest.

Don't spend too much time on it, though. Your eyes will hurt if you stare at the screen without moderation.

    But I suck at coding...

On a more serious note, yeah. I've been trying, but... I don't really know what situations I should be stepping in to handle. I've been defaulting to my usual- (If in doubt, go in and handle it anyway)- but I don't want to seem overzealous, or step into situations that don't need a mod to handle them.

And I don't really know where else I'd ask >_>

    Ask Fighteer for modding tips.

For patience lessons, ask Bobby G.

For banhammer training, ask Fast Eddie.

    >_>

I think I will, actually. Although I do not have a banhammer- I am a mod, not an admin.

Actually, I should clear that up.

When I talk to people about them being banned, unless I specifically mention calling GMH or Longfellow in, please don't take it seriously.

    Thanks?

    What brought that on?
  • Just watching you fret over your new found responsabilities. It was cute.
  • Only thing I think of is to not intervene pre-emptively, I'd say: if something seems to be heading in the wrong direction but it doesn't, you'll undermine your authority.

    ^^ I see.

^ Hmmm... But if I wait until it boils over, I'll have to clean off the stove...
  • It was more the case on what I observed in threads that turned into dogpiling: the moment you warn people not to step over the line, they'll just veil the personal attack nature of the posts better. If one waits a tad longer and than comes in with mod edits and a lock, it prevents people from toeing the line too much. But my observation could be off.

Ah... That's actually a valid point. I never thought of it that way.

Hmmm... I will take this into consideration.

    Hmmm...

Fighteer has responded, with some quite good advice I will take into consideration.
  • Simple answer: Don't moderate unless you absolutely have to. And when you absolutely have to, you'll know what to do.

That's not a very good philosophy.

Remember, you are not a baby sitter. The mice know the rules, they are capable of reading them and following them. If they break them, you sweep in like a owl and FUCKING EAT THEM RAWHUAUGHAGAAUHAHUAAHAUAHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
  • I'm probably not good at ariculating what you should be doing, so I'll avoid writing any how-to-mod tomes. Also I'm not the world's best mod myself :p. So far you and Everest have been fine. I think it's something you learn through experence. And we're a communicative mod team so we can help each other in our secret modcave conversations.

Modcave? Can we have a modmobile?

(By the way, I still haven't figured out how to add people to conversations, but Glenn may add you to one I sent him...)

(... I think the main reason I sent it at all was that it's after midnight... In fact, I should be in bed. Goodnight.)

But cleaning the stove is much easier in webspace.

I go by this: When crazy, sketchy, or otherwise probably-bad shit happens, I ask myself whether it's against the rules.  If it is, then I have every right to shut that shit down; if I don't but instead warn people to stop it, then I'm being nice.

    Has friends besides tanks now
I feel like I've lost a part of my essence upon becoming a mod; now I'm beginning to see everything in terms of "is this against the rules?", and less of "this looks like an interesting topic; I want in."

I think I just need time to get used to it, though. This is just a bit of anxiety.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I wish I could do that.
  • I kinda understand where Everest's coming from--I'll admit that, sometimes, once I know someone is a mod, it's hard for me to read their posts without assuming there's some kind of authority behind absolutely everything they say, whether that was their intention or not.

Maybe it would help if you explicitly state when you're acting as a moderator? That way we could assume, the rest of the time, that you're simply participating in the discussion like anyone else.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^I do try to remember to go "mod hat on" when I'm acting as a mod, but sometimes I forget.
  • What the heck happened in that thread that got locked?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I was told it was condescending for some reason.
  • What part of the thread? Why?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Basically, Vorpy and Myrmidon are ignoring each other now because of an incident yesterday. Vorpy was brought up, Myrmidon went into overreaction mode and blanked his posts. With the thread now sless and in bad trritory, I locked it.

^^ That was in response to CA.
