Not everyone has read Homestuck.

  • Well, I've started. Seems great so far.
  • Oh god, really?

Guise, stop getting me to read Homestuck. I've tried it, and it isn't my kind of thing.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    ...
  • I wonder if snowbull caught up with it yet?
  • Yeah, a long time ago. it was good until I caught up. I'm just not equipped for serial reading. I'd stop reading for a few months, but I got most of my IRL friends to read it too so I'd be tempted too much, and I'd have every single thing spoiled.

All in all, I'd say its okay.

I haven't read it because I don't like narrative webcomics in the first place, and while I did briefly entertain the idea of reading it, the fans are way too obnoxious for me to feel like doing so.

Also, I feel like punching someone every time I see one of the trolls now, so I probably wouldn't be able to enjoy it once they show up.

I liked homestuck (after a few debacles) until new fans started coming in, two in particular, who went from "aw, they just discovered it" to "OH MY FUCKING GOD THE THREAD IS IN WEBCOMICS GO THERE, WE GET IT, YOU LIKE HOMESTUCK. YOU DON'T SEE ME TALKING ABOUT MY OBSESSIONS 24/7 ON ALL THREADS. MOSTLY."
  • ^^I should make my avatar more obviously homestuck related.

^I know not what you speak of

  • ...wasn't talking about you, if that's what you're asking, both happened after you were banned.

I imagined so, especially considering I apparently talk about it so little Gelzo wasn't sure I had caught up.

I have to say though, if those debacles you're talking about are what I think they are, that was fun reading.

    Please don't.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
I have to say, the barrier for obnoxiousness must be really fucking low if simply having an avatar from a series you like falls under it.
  • To be fair, everyone and their mom seems to have a homestuck avatar on tvtropes, and I usually see at least one or two on other forums.
  • But plenty of people have animé avatars, and those aren't hated.

    ...

    mostly.
  • lolrallyfan

But anime isn't a single work, so maybe that has something to do with it?

And? They're pictures. Collections of pixels conjoined together to create a large image. No one, I don't care how much they don't like Homestuck, is being hurt by a bunch of people making avatars of a popular webcomic.
  • I've never hated homestuck avatars, but I have had associative emotions due to said annoyance above.
  • Images are symbols, and homestuck avatars could contribute to some sort of feeling that everyone is part of something you aren't, and something you don't even want to be part of. I can see how it would get annoying.

I don't think I've ever really felt that on the internet, so I wouldn't really know.

When like thirty people use nothing but avatars of the same twelve characters for several months despite changing their avatar every fucking hour, it starts to get pretty obnoxious. Especially when those twelve characters look extremely similar to each other.

That being said, it's not really about avatars so much as that was the most visible representation of the forum's obsession with the series, which (thank God) has subsided somewhat since last summer.

And yes, I am completely aware that I am being stupid here.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It doesn't help that I was still playing avatar games in FG at this point.
  • I know that a certain troper used Yu Gi Oh avatars a lot, and I hated him, so when a troper I was perfectly fine with used one, I automatically hated him, just because I assumed he was the other user.

I suspect that the dislike of the avatars is something like that.

^^Yeah, visual similarity probably also has something to do with it. Even with toe hoes, they have differently coloured clothing and hair instead of blackhair/greyskin/blackclothes.

    no it doesn't.
  • Uhm, to be fair, it is something subjective, so some people might see it that way.

    You can change. You can.
^^ For you, it doesn't. Not everyone has the same level of patience as you.

^Damn it, AHR. NINJAING PEOPLE IS NOT COOL.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Patience? How much patience could not getting angry at people for using avatars they don't like possibly require ?
  • Well, it's an association thing. And I do not think anyone is necessarily foaming at the mouth, I hope.
  • They're somethin' else.
Everytime I see a fanart avatar of a troll, I'm like "... what is that?"

I really should get around to reading this, but the avatars themselves have hyped up the webcomic inadvertently, and I'm afraid of it falling under my expectations.

Oh, come on, you can't condemn a whole subset of people because of Demongodofchaos.
  • Noim: Oh, I didn't do it intentionally. It was just a subconcious thing, of disregarding the posts entirely and it wasn't until I saw the name in passing I realized I had been ignoring the wrong person.

I was assuming that the homestuck thing was a slightly more concious version of that.

Or did you just post as an excuse to name drop?

@Wicked223: I never got angry at anyone for using a troll avatar, just a bit frustrated with the sheer number of them. And even that didn't come until I'd spent at least two months posting "It's yet another troll!" in the do-you-know-what-the-above-avatar-is thread.

(Yes, I should've stopped posting in those threads, and I did do that eventually. But the thing is that I quite enjoyed them before the troll invasion.)
