"Liking submissive girls = you're sexist"

Heaven forbid I have a preference. What is so horrible about liking mild submissive girls anyway? Some girls just naturally are. Others are more actiony. It's just the way things are. Topic inspired by some idiot on ANN saying that all moe is sexist/misogynistic trash made because Otaku are somehow being "scared" of how independent Japanese women are getting.

Um, dude, I don't think that it's the woman being submissive what is sexist...

Don't bother listening to them, seriously. You made it seem like this is something someone saying this to you in particular.

Also, it doesn't matter how independent Japanese women get by now anyway, since ever since the time where fathers could sell their daughters passed the typical otaku has close to a nonexistent chance of getting anyone that is close to the idealized apppearance in anime. Unless they rape them.
  • His entire argument was this:

Moe has girls who are designed to give off a "big brother" instinct.

Ergo, it paints women as weak and submissive ITS SEXIST LOL.

...While I'm not a fan of the moe character-type, I'm not entirely sure how that's sexist. Besides, isn't the "big brother" thing common in certain relationships?
  • I never cared for submissive girls. I find them boring.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Moe often is designed to make the woman seem small and vulnerable, thus invoking a big-brother instinct. In that regard, yes, it is sexist- until you realize they do it to males, too.
  • Because, according to this guy, any portrayal of a female character where she's even the slightest bit cute IS SEXIST TRASH FROM THE PATRIARCHY.

You want me to copy-paste one his arguments?

See, I like males like that, so maybe that's why I can't see it as sexist. >_>

    ^^Sure.

Nothing. Morality Doormats and Will-less Sex Slaves are another matter though.

    Some girls just naturally are.

    Yup.

Quotes plz. Let's see where he said this so we can go "ha".

    AHR would like to differ.
  • This was his small rant:

"Oh, and then we have moe, a genre that was invented specifically for Japanese guys who dislike how independent and strong-willed Japanese women are becoming--the aesthetic is basically all about fawning over small, cute, childish girls who are likely to need protection and such. And don't try to dispute this, anyone, I did my research {the fact that things like Lucky Star and K-On originated in seinen magazines should be enough of a statement here}.

Part of a bigger one here:

I'm pretty sure that's just because such people pay more money, since moe things are enjoyed by children too.

Titan's posts were relatively well thought out, actually.

It was Mushi-Man who posted that.

    fantasies.

ah, okay then. Point still stands.

She also acknowledges that rape is a bad thing, in the real world.
  • Cygan: Oops. It was SwedishElf who said what I quoted, though.
  • So as long as the preference is confined to fantasy it is fine?

Cause we all know Chagen won't get a partner anyway so his preferences are irrelevant then

    Yes.

We could spend hours debating the inanity and general incorrectness of that, of course, but I think we all have better stuff to do than risk importing drama, eh?

^ As long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
  • You can change. You can.
It is sexist. But having a sexual preference for submissive girls is not particularly bad.

However, moe is sexist for a couple of reasons...at least, it's prominence in females instead of males is.
  • Like they know we exist.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    ^^ Negima! begs to differ.

    ^ Exporting, sorry.
  • You know I'm actually quite astonished that I have a differing taste/opinion from Chagen for once.

An exception does not make a tendency
  • @Juan: So, why not just have more male characters that qualify as moe, then?
  • You can change. You can.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be. I'm saying there aren't.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Is moe sexist in the same way 1:17 of this video is racist or is it more acceptable since it's a cartoon?
  • I can't help but wonder why. Is it that they appeal to less people? If that's the case, I can think of like, at least ten people off the back of my head that would love something like that...
