    Loser
I think European-American probably should be used more. I guess the reason why it has not been used so much is because most of the colonists came from Europe, so European-American was not specific enough. If almost everyone else came from Europe, I imagine that saying that one was European-American would not really help establish any kind of identity and that terms like German-American, English-American, or Dutch-American would make more sense for that purpose. I suppose people just kept using those terms instead of European-American.

That being said, I think that the same can (and should be said) about terms like Asian-American and Native-American since there is diversity among people who belong to those groups. I feel like the term African-American is a bit more complicated since it seems like it could refer to people who are first, second, third, or fourth generation Americans who moved from Africa or it could describe people who were descendents of slaves. In the latter case, I think that it may be rather difficult to use the equivalent of German-American or French-American since one may not really know what part of Africa one's family is originally from.
  • I think we should stick wiht the basics. Latin American. European American, African American, and Asian American.
  • The vast majority of white American's ARE European-Americans!
  • Exactly! So why do we not use that term?
  • You can change. You can.
    Because it's redundant.
  • and African American isn't?
  • You can change. You can.
    Nope.

I think we should stick wiht the basics. Latin American. European American, African American, and Asian American.

    You mean Latin American American.
  • African American, Asian American, European American,  Hispanic American, and Native American. would that be so hard instead of assuming white as the default with just "American"?
  • Why does everyone have to be American? Over here, if someone is black they just get called black.

Calling someone African American implies both that they are from Africa and from America. When neither of them are true. For example, I have a black, American friend and he's never even set foot in Africa.
  • You can change. You can.
    Lineage...it's a thing.

    eh, most countries do it.
  • it's kind of a shtick among politically correct Americans down here.
  • "African-American" comes from the euphemism treadmill--"Black" started being considered offensive, so "African-American" was created....which is now being considered offensive as well, and up the euphemism treadmill we go.
  • Also I'm, thinking I'm going to do a political statement posting the Bill of Rights around town.
  • DO IT, it makes you go outside and have conversations with real people instead of us drab netizens.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
African american is silly, black works fine (It is the correct use over here)
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
You know what I hate? When people call black people from Britain or something "African-American."
