People Expect Me to Know What Acronyms Stand For

Okay, now that I'm done with that job app, let's look at arks's videogames post.
Let's talk about video games. I'm all about the PERSONAL COMPUTER. Most of the games
from my early childhood were from a single company, though. They
released series, like one set in fairy tales with installments like
QftC, RtT, and PoR. (After that they went to PaC and then got better,
with realeases like HTGT and TPB. TPB got some flak for being more
cartoony, but I think it's one of the stronger installments). Another
series set in the future, with installments like VR and RWatTR, which
would have been the best in the series if it weren't so buggy on newer
computers. My favorite series from that company though is one I
discovered later, originally called HQ (the name was changed later) with
installments like SYWBAH, SoD (another game which would be the best in
the series if it weren't so buggy), and DF. DF gets a lot of flak
because it's 3d instead of sprited. I still think it's incredibly great
and a nice cap to the entire series. I am just now playing GK, by one
Miss JJ and it makes me wonder how I was able to beat those games
without a walkthrough.
I also played the old Zk (ZORK?) games from INFOCOM,
like TGUE (which was the first). My favorites, though are BZ and RtZ (RETURN TO something?).
RtZ might seem outdated with it's FMV (FULL MOTION VIDEO) style mixed with old computer
graphics, but that didn't matter back when I played it.
I've
only gotten into LA recently. The MI series are really fun, though.
Also, GF, which I agree with the reviews. Every fan of the genre needs
to play it at least once. SaMHtR wasn't really that good, but the Tt
remakes are great. Haven't played DotT or MM. IJ:FoA is another great
game from LA.
In other genres, I have the free games from my
computer, especially CC. SF, and FC are also good time wasters. I also
played DOOM a bit back when it came out, as well as another game from the
same company: Hrtc. My favorite, though was DESCENT, which I can't play on
any new computers. Beside, I think I lost the disk. i wasn't playing DOOM to full potential anyways. After I played HALF-LIFE, I went back to DOOM and
found out about the Alt key. That Alt key makes everything so much
easier.
We also had games like CIVILIZATION, WARCRAFT, STARCRAFT, and AGE OF EMPIRES. Also a
couple of obscure games like MoO and Utpa (UTOPIA?). I would be surprised if
anyone here has heard of let alone played Utpa. I stopped playing them
recently, though, because they take up a lot of time to get anywhere.
In
terms of console gameplay, I owned a MEGA DRIVE, so of course, I had games like
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and sequels. I also had this TETRIS clone PyPy (PUYOPUYO?), which was addicting
as hell. I was never good at setting up chains, though. One game that
really gets my nostagia filter is JM, which had a magic system that
involved combining two magics to get a third. (This was also implemented
in GUITAR HERO? probably not).
In the next generation I got a PLAYSTATION, which had games like CRASH BANDICOOT, SPYRO THE DRAGON, TWISTED METAL, FINAL FANTASY, and SF (SHINING FORCE?). (Yes, I realize things like METAL GEAR SOLID are missing. I
didn't own them). Later I got a PLAYSTATION 2, and got KATAMARI DAMACY, JAK AND DAXTER, ICO (lol freebie), RaC, and SC.
Nowadays, I do most
of my gaming through STEAM, getting many games from VALVE, like HALF-LIFE, PORTAL, TEAM FORTRESS (2?),
as well as games from other companies: BH, PoP, WORLD OF GOO, SUPER
MARIO BROTHERSMEAT BOY (You get bloodeverywhere in that game), B:AA (so looking forward to B:AC). A:TDD. The
list can go on. I'm also in the freeware scene. METROIDVANIA's are the best, I
believe. CAVE STORY, BUNNY MUST DIE, I WANNA BE THE GUY, AN UNTITLED STORY, LYLE IN CUBE SECTOR, you know, games like that. The big
name companies have great games in that genre as well. I'm partial to ARIA OF SORROW and ZERO MISSION myself.
Zork is right, so is PuyoPuyo and Utopia. Guitar Hero and Shining Force are wrong. Think about the system those paragraphs are devoted to.
Glenn has not played a certain genre which I'm a big fan of I guess.
Return to Zork?
Let's talk about video games. I'm all about the PERSONAL COMPUTER. Most
of the games
from my early childhood were from a single company,
though. They
released series, like one set in fairy tales with
installments like
QUEST FOR THE CROWN, ROMANCING THE THRONE, and (THE) PERILS OF ROSELLA. (After that they went to PaC
and then got better,
with realeases like HEIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW (I have this game) and THE PRINCELESS BRIDE. THE PRINCELESS BRIDE got some
flak for being more
cartoony, but I think it's one of the stronger
installments). Another
series set in the future (SPACE QUEST), with installments
like VOHAUL'S REVENGE and ROGER WILCO AND THE TIME RIPPERS, which
would have been the best in the series if
it weren't so buggy on newer
computers. My favorite series from that
company though is one I
discovered later, originally called HERO'S QUEST (the
name was changed later) with
installments like SO YOU WANT (TO) BE A HERO, SHADOWS OF DARKNESS(another
game which would be the best in
the series if it weren't so buggy),
and DRAGON FIRE. DRAGON FIRE gets a lot of flak
because it's 3d instead of sprited. I
still think it's incredibly great
and a nice cap to the entire
series. I am just now playing GABRIEL KNIGHT, by one
Miss JANE JENSON and it makes me
wonder how I was able to beat those games
without a walkthrough.
Still haven't figured out PaC.
...oh wait, that's YOUR version of my abbreviation.
like THE GREAT UNDERGROUND EMPIRE
(which was the first). My favorites, though are BEYOND ZORK and RETURN TO ZORK.
RETURN TO ZORK might seem outdated with it's FULL MOTION
VIDEO style mixed with old computer
graphics, but that didn't
matter back when I played it.
The previous games use a text parser and therefore can't be called PaCA.
only gotten into LUCASARTS recently. The MONKEY ISLAND series are really fun,
though.
Also, GRIM FANDANGO, which I agree with the reviews. Every fan of the
genre needs
to play it at least once. SAM AND MAX HIT THE ROAD wasn't really that
good, but the TELLTALE (GAMES)
remakes are great. Haven't played DAY OF THE TENTACLE or MANIAC MANSION. INDIANA JONES: (AND THE) FATE OF ATLANTIS is another great
game from LUCASARTS.
of my gaming through STEAM, getting many
games from VALVE, like HALF-LIFE, PORTAL, TEAM FORTRESS (2?),
as
well as games from other companies: BEAT HAZARD, PRINCE OF PERSIA, WORLD OF GOO, SUPER MARIO BROTHERS MEAT BOY
(You get blood
everywhere in that game), BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM (so looking forward to BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY). AMNESIA: THE DARK DESCENT.
Thank you Steam forums!
RaC is probably RATCHET AND CLANK, and if SF is that then SC is probably SOUL CALIBUR.
I leave the following to other people:
* CC: may be a common free game that probably comes with the computer
* SF: may be a common free game that probably comes with the computer
* MoO: probably a real-time strategy game
* JM: a Sega Genesis/MegaDrive game that has "a magic system that
involved combining two magics to get a third"
* GH: a game that also has "a magic system that
involved combining two magics to get a third"
Soul Calibur didn't come out on PS2.
GH came out on MD.
@ arks: I noticed that you didn't seem to be much of a fan of fighting games, so I was suspicious.
EDIT: yep, I just thought they were free.
SC is probably STEAMBOT CHRONICLES, rather than (THE) SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES.
SC is Sly Cooper.
I might have to check out Syphon Filter. And Steambot Chronicles. And Jewel Master.
Blackthorne suggests CHIP'S CHALLENGE.
Since Chip's Challenge is in the Microsoft Entertainment Pack, I'll try SKIFREE for SF.
So, who else has played Utopia?
I think you and I are still high on Mystery Hunt.
Not that I mind.
