People saying a work is more complicated than it actually is

I find there are a lot of works that seem complicated during the experience, but wind up sounding simple when you explain them to another person.

I've also seen the exact opposite: Something that seems straightforward, but when you try to explain it you realize how effed up it is. Anyone else ever have that experience?
