People saying a work is more complicated than it actually is

I think the one hit hardest with this is Evangelion. It is not largely a mindfuck, with the exception of the last two episodes and the movie, and even the movie becomes mostly comprehensible once you read some background material.

FLCL has some weird shit going on, and not all of it makes sense, but the broad strokes of the story are understandable.

Homestuck is not especially complicated, and compared to some time travel stories it is downright tame in its simplicity. Problem Sleuth has things that go one that are harder to understand.

House of Leaves is not an impossible to follow mess. Did I understand it at a thematic level? No. Was I able to follow the general thrust of events? Yes.

Brazil makes perfect sense. There's hardly an ounce of mindfuckery in it.

Did I understand the ending of Ergo Proxy? No. Was it possible to figure out what the Proxies are, what happened, and what will happen? Yes.

Eraserhead is really the only commonly held up mindfuck film that I've seen that held up to the hype.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT

Honestly, while House of Leaves was rather mindscrewy, the only other things to have given me strong headaches in that regard are David Lynch films.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
  • ^Was not hard to follow at all.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I know.  But everyone said it was.  Which is why I posted it.
  • Honestly, I can't get mad at people who do this. I'm just waiting for them to see some really incomprehensible stuff.
  • ^What is that from?
  • Drakengard, apparently.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
One of Square's worst games, next to the Last Remnant.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
The Last Remnant was decent... well, the PC version was.
  • Also, 12 oz Mouse is not that devilishly hard to follow. I have difficulty understanding how people can call it complete nonsense after they've watched a few episodes in order.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
It's badly drawn, and it distracts from the....message.

It's just about nothing, really. People can't seem to wrap their heads around a show about nothing unless it's very much, nearly entirely comedy-driven. Which, come to think of it, also explains FLCL.

V Okay, I only watched one episode, but that's what it seemed to me. Just general stoner meandering.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
I think it is. Stalemate detected.

And how do you tell if a show is about nothing?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    The Seinfeld Scale.

Actually, I have no idea. I guess taking comedies out of the equation would leave you with shows that have a plot that never really has a nuanced rising action, climax, falling action, or resolution.
  • People can't seem to wrap their heads around a show about nothing unless it's very much, nearly entirely comedy-driven. Which, come to think of it, also explains FLCL.

Er... isn't FLCL a comedy though? At least to a large degree anyway, though not entirely.
  • I think he was talking about this mouse thing being about nothing.

    Also, FLCL isn't pure comedy.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
How does Zardoz fit into this equation?

Also, fucking Zardoz I can't get that word out of my head and it's driving me nuts. fucking zardoz.
  • ^After having googled that, I must see this movie.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
THE GUN IS GOOD. THE PLOT COHERENCE IS EVIL.

Zardoz would probably be around a 7. It's confusing, meandering, and pointless, but does have a loosely connected string of events.
  • I understood Zardoz perfectly. Its message was very clear:

Gun = Good, Penis = Evil.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I thought the main message was not to trust James Bond in a speedo.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
It's a floating stone head that pukes fucking GUNS.

That's almost as awesome as a gun that shoots little guns.
  • Personally, I'd rather have a flamethrower that shoots chocolate hundred-dollar bills. Imitation chocolate.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
A flamethrower that shoots little flamethrowers, or molotov cocktails.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I want a grenade that lets loose a bunch of guns that fire a bunch of littler guns that fire knives.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    Holy shi

    that would be cool.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
You know what I want? Something simple.

    A gun that shoots knives.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    i want

    a gun

    that shoots.........................................................................................bullets
