After finishing that LP, I say Chrono Cross doesn't seem very offensive to me. Of course, it's probably bias, but what isn't?
To prove my point, I think Trigger is pretty overrated. It's decent, and had some good ideas and music (other than the normal battle music, which at least is not as bad as Cross's normal battle music), but it's not the best thing ever, plot-wise or character-wise. That's also why I didn't hate Crimson Echoes with every fiber of my being, even though it's bad no matter how you look at it.
Also, I think this mutant of a game is pretty charming for me to play someday, because it at least had ambition, even if it created a mutant instead of an angel, so to speak. It seems from the battle system alone that the development team wasn't afraid to take some risks, though they need to draw a line before getting so convoluted and ridiculous they aren't even thinking anymore.
EDIT: Chrono Trigger is also too easy. Which is why I'm thinking of hacking of a remix with harder everything.
EDIT2: I've seen worse than the worst of the... ahem... "colorful" cast of Cross.
That definitely contributes to the emotional impact of the story.
Not to mention that many of us young adult gamers encountered this epic adventure in our teens or younger years. It was a formative time.
Heck, when I first played the game, I associated Lavos's theme with 9/11.
Just to be clear here: FF6 is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. About five years ago I went crazy and sold every RPG I owned, and it was the only one I kept. No thought process, no reason, I just held the cart in my hand and said "Fuck no, I'm keeping this."
You're missing the point dude. The point I made was that Square games usually have a lot of ill-thought design ideas, and even their best ones have something wrong if you look. That was just an example--and I said upfront that it was a minor thing.
Fine thing to be talking about in a Chrono Trigger topic, eh?
I can't think of anything to say that wouldn't be a repeat of what I said earlier though.
