And yes, this includes many pictographs in pictographic languages.

Comments

  • Really, the less division there is between written language and spoken language, the better.

Speaking of which: fuck you, Worcestershire sauce.

  • Logogrammatic writing systems don't count in this case. Neither do syllabaries.

    Only alphabets do.

Also, this is apparently a problem with English mainly.

^^ Honestly, I'd be more confused if Worcestershire was pronounced the way it was written.  Not that I'm not confused already, but at least the "Worcester" part is easy enough.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Worcestershire = Wuss-tershire.
  • Well, yeah.  Except that "shire" doesn't have an obvious pronunciation so that doesn't help even a little bit.  It's apparently like "sheer" except I intuitively would think it'd be "shy-er."
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    It's either sheer or shur.

I personally say wuss-ter-shur sauce, which shows my midlands heritage.

    woostershurr sauce
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    wust-hurrr-shurrr surrrrrse

    wuss herp share sauce?
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    A Hooey Zottol

    Ahuizotl.
  • I've also heard it as wooster shower.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
It's just as sensible a pronunciation as Gloucestershire! ...Which is, to say, not at all.
  • Greenwich in London, doesn't need the "w".

    or the extra e, apparently.

No, actually, the second e is pronounced like an n.
