The lack of literature on game design

We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Seriously, you'd think that'd be more popular, given all the stuff that apparently goes into designing a game.

Most gamers have an aversion to reading.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
    I don't think that's true...
  • Writer, Artist, Obscure.
That's not true at all, Chagen. Gaming tends to require tons of reading. Especially JRPGs.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

  • As a petty and vindictive person, I have to take extra steps not to appear petty and vindictive.
I have two game design / game studies books sitting on my shelf right now, and a third one in a box somewhere. There's no real shortage of them.

    Names?
  • Okay, most of the FPSfags and the like hate reading.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

  • Okay, now you're just being a dick.

    Poot dispenser here
Hey, I play most of Valve's library, and I like reading!

Speaking of Valve's offerings, it might have to do with the fact that developers already give game design pointers (Valve's employees share their secrets from time to time) and the fact that when it comes to building a game, you are either working on a pre-made engine with its own guides/documentation (usually in digital format, like Valve's Source Engine with the Docs for Source SDK and the Valve Developer Community Wiki) or an engine that you built yourself (and even then, you probably only need a guide book for whatever language you're using to write it).
  • "Hey, I play most of Valve's library, and I like reading!"

    Okay, I meant the CODFags.

Which, you know, are a lot of people. Black Ops is apparently the best selling game of all time.

Maybe that title will be taken by Portal 2...
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
^^Black Ops has sold about 4.5 million copies. Wii Sports has sold 76 million.

Not counting bundled games, Super Smash Bros. Melee sold 7.6 million.
  • Strange, I swear someplace reported that Black Ops was the best selling game of all time. And I swear it was a gaming magazine...they tend to suck, though.

    Except for PC Gamer.
  • They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...

And I swear it was a gaming magazine...they tend to suck, though.

You're not the only one who thinks that, Chagen.

  • A lot of it's digital, being the digital age an' all- Gamasutra is where most of it conglomerates. This one gets cited a lot in game design papers we do for our class.

There's plenty of books though, our library has a section of them- I remember reading this, this and this there, amoung others that I can't remember the name of.
  • Okay, most of the FPSfags and the like hate reading

Okay, now you're just being a dick.

Do I detect one kitchen utensil referring to another as ebon?
  • "Most gamers have an aversion to reading."
"Okay, most of the FPSfags and the like hate reading."
    "Okay, I meant the CODFags."

    Goddammit, Chagen.
  • I said that because CODfags form the majority of gamers today.
  • You're missing the point.

Also that's not true anyway, considering Bejeweled sold twice as many copies as any Call of Duty game ever did.

I think you'll find that most gamers use Wiis and handhelds. Neither are terribly conducive to playing Call of Duty.

Remember what we said about getting your facts straight before you leap in swinging?

Also, referring to wide groups of people as 'FPSfags' automatically excludes you from complaining about other posters' dickishness. Just, y'know, FYI.
  • Not to mention the whole "lol COD fans don't like reading" thing.
  • "Also that's not true anyway, considering Bejeweled sold twice as many copies as any Call of Duty game ever did."

Okay, COD fans form the majority of real gamers.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
To be fair, I'm fairly certain playing Black Ops was the reason my copy of A Clash of Kings dissipated into the aether.
  • So, that's why I was never able to finish Madame Bovary? Huh, makes so much sense all of a sudden.
