I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why single-sex schools exist.
Whilst reasons such as religion seem logical enough, other than that, I
just can't see it. If the reason is "students will be otherwise
distracted by the opposite sex", I'd call that out as ridiculous. I'm
only able to speak for all-male schools, but if you have a classroom
full of teenage boys, and you expect their complete attention, you're an
idiot. Oh, and if you go to an all-male school, and happen to dislike
sports? ...Yeah, have "fun" with that. The others sure will. Valuable
lesson: Don't put over 1000 boys together in the same building, and try
to make them co-exist perfectly. It's stupid. I'm just glad that I got
out of it 2 years ago.

Yeah, these are weird. I think schools should be co-ed. Also, transgender students (such as a Male-to-Female who was forced to a all-boys school) would not have a very fun time.
I used to hate single-sex schools actually because I thought they breeded homosexuality.
Why?
Sammy: Because cramming a bunch of people of the same sex together is bad news.
Especially for boys. You only have to look at my all-male P.E class to see that trying to keep boys under control is impossible. Not sure if girls are the same way or not.
And I don't think it's good to be cut off from one sex that much. I feel that it may affect the student body's view of the other sex--such as all-boys schools, I can't help but feel that misogyny breeds in them. Especially since a few dumbasses would.take it to mean that men are better than women and that's why they must be seperated.
And the transgender thing I mentioned. And gay students would go through hell at an all-boys school, given how homophobic teenage boys tend to be.
(If you're wondering why I'm almost exclusively talking about all-boys schools, it's because...I'm a dude, and I don't really think I'm qualified to make any judgements relating to girls)

turns out that in real life most people encounter people of the opposite
gender on occasion."
I interact with guys every day, and not just the faculty. And even if I didn't, normal people don't magically lose their ability to function around men/women after spending a few years primarily with one sex. Maybe younger kids would be stunted somehow, but involuntary single-sex schooling is daft anyway.
"Personally I don't think they work. in the abscense of the opposite sex they will always find something to fuck."
If you define "working" as "corraling and controlling horny kids", of course they don't. Good thing that's not the point of single-sex education, religious parents' delusions to the contrary.
I agree with you about single-sex schools. I think they can be especially harmful for people who are unsocial and thus would otherwise not interact with people their age outside of school. It may just be that I like to have a diversity of perspectives. For example, I would not choose to go to an all-male or all-female school for that reason. I doubt they have gender segregated puppy training schools anyway so I suppose that is a moot point though.
I have heard that single-sex schools work for some people (in terms of test scores) so perhaps it is best to take it on a case-by-case basis. I guess some people like that kind of environment. Still, I am curious as to why some like single-sex universities. I have a harder time understanding that since I would think that by that age the benefits of being with only male or only female students would decrease.
in short No reason at all ;D
Epicwin."How exactly is that improved by segregating genders?"
Short answer: it probably isn't. Long answer: it's extremely difficult to determine the effect of segregation because you immediately run into issues with selection bias and inconsistent grading/achievement standards. That being said, studies have found an overall *slight* benefit to single-sex schooling at the high school level, but it's not terribly convincing. At the university level, the benefits are much more pronounced, but it's a voluntary system so self-selection kind of messes everything up.
Did it contribute to my love of cock? Possibly.
And to make a note on Chagen's comment on transpeople, I'll say that, from experience, he's right. Not that I can talk for anyone but myself, of course.
This idea is wrong, because people become horny first and then find sexual stimuli to release their urges upon.
