What fantasy has become

  • WRPGs always make me think of ye olde butcherede englishe anyway. I've never completed Baldurs Gate, though Minsc is a great character. Dragon Age bored me to tears and played terribly. The dialogue wasn't even that great and besides which I hate the idea that one can be playing a game wrong by running straight through the main story. Sidequests should be optional only if they exist to BOLSTER the main game, not if they're required to give it any semblance of sanity or fun.
  • A genre has to be Deconstructed before it can be Reconstructed.

  • I like turtles.
Not every genre needs reconstruction, much less deconstruction.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I don't even know what those words mean anymore.
  • TV Tropes never used them right anyway.

Evangelion is THE deconstruction of mecha anime? Excuse me while I almost vomit from laughing so hard.

Also, Haruhi Suzumiya deconstructs every trope ever ...when it's basically a moe fanservice harem series that, at most, parodies the respective tropes.

And somehow, Warhammer 40K also deconstructs everything.
  • Inside, too dark to read
We could derrida how Tvtropes uses "deconstruction" all day.

You mean very not oftenly? Because I have only seen it mentioned a few times, and only on anime pages.
  • You haven't seen how Warhammer 40K BRUTALLY deconstructs every single trope ever, possibly including ones it doesn't even use?
  • Inside, too dark to read
Would the ultimate troper gush be labeling a work you like as "subverting badass deconstruction"?
  • Deconstruction is revealing the latent contradictions of a text through close reading and paying attention to what it says rather than what it's trying to say, thus revealing the repressed underside of any system of thought.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
The problem is, it's a very easy word to throw around, and on a site where half the users don't seem to know what "subvert" and "avert" mean, good luck getting them to understand comparatively difficult concepts like deconstruction.

And it is a fairly difficult concept, I think.  After all, Derrida is sufficiently difficult reading that the term is mildly controversial even among professional literary critics.

I'm fine with it being used to mean "shows the reasons this wouldn't work in real life", but I just wanted to get the correct definition out there.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I use both definitions, although I tend towards the real one.

So, comparatively, reconstruction would be showing how something does work in real life, but shows exactly what would need to happen for that to be so.
  • Inside, too dark to read
Reconstruction is when you try to force a trope to not be racist, but then you get impeached and it imposes racist laws for a century.

HATTER > My problem is that I haven't encountered any recent AAA fantasy games that give me that feeling of wonder and exploration and immersion.

Seems like, as you state, here's your actual problem.  it just happens to manifest in a taste for more "stereotypically" classically Tolkienesque content, but this is the actual problem.

I feel something similar, even though my taste is for the colorful and vivid style more associated with JRPGs.  Perhaps it's that we've seen the genre so much that we know what's coming and it's hard to genuinely surprise us anymore.

FORZARE > This is the internet, Vorpy.  There is everything if you look.

I haven't found episodes of the English dub of Eagle Riders.

THORN14 > Evangelion is THE deconstruction of mecha anime? Excuse me while I almost vomit from laughing so hard.

Evangelion is more just a psychological series masquerading as a mecha series.

ROTTWEILER > Reconstruction is when you try to force a trope to not be racist, but then you get impeached and it imposes racist laws for a century.

  • Evangelion is THE deconstruction of mecha anime? Excuse me while I almost vomit from laughing so hard.

Evangelion is the deconstruction of super robot anime. Not mecha.
  • Evangelion is the deconstruction of my ass.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds terrifying.

Evangelion is the deconstruction of my ass.

so stupid emotional teenagers with giant robots are your ass? I love your ass.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Everyone loves MV's ass.

I want to nibble on your ass, Bob.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
So what is My Little Pony the deconstruction of?

It's popular, therefore it has to deconstruct something!

    ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
It's the deconstruction of Atlas Shrugged. I give myself a 10/10 and accept my doublemeta award. Have a nice day! World peace!
