"HOW DARE MY TEEN SEE SOMETHING SEXUAL!"

[tɕagɛn]

How come every parent in the entire world (or maybe just America, I don't know what Euro parents think about this) thinks that their teen will be corrupted if they see even the slightest depiction of sex?

Seriously, parents. Your teens read and watch porn, and usually it's some kind of fetish porn that would make most people do a double take. Yet they always assume their teen must be a delicate innocent flower. It's kind of insulting, to be honest.

(yes, this was partially inspired by Myr's thread)

Heh, this reminds me: my parents recently asked me about 4chan after some recent press stuff about Anonymous, and when I was warning them of all the reasons they shouldn't go on it, they thought it was hilarious that it was the teenager warning the parents about objectionable internet content.

    ^^

There is distinctly less of this in the UK, and I'm pretty sure in the EU as well.
  • I came in from a Valentines date this year. My dad asked me if I got my hole.
  • I practically felt like our teachers and parents wanted us to look at porn.
  • I've always found it backwards how children are commonly allowed to see graphic depictions of violence on TV, but sex is an absolute no-no.

You don't know how much sex there is in a high school English curriculum.

Damnit, you people, why can't I subvert that with people acknowledging it?
  • Thought: people get more angry when a book aimed at teens explores sexuality in a serious way than when a comedy aimed at teens explores sexuality in a juvenile way.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    Odd that.
  • Welcome to America--Land of sexual repression, racism, bigotry, xenophobia, discrimination, poverty, crime, and drugs!

But hey, we have chicks and beer, it can't be all bad.
  • It's also getting much better everyday, so calm the fuck down.
  • I know, but it's lagging behind others way too much.

...Okay, except for maybe the Middle East, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

And my post was intended to be slightly tongue-in-cheek.

I think being gay was still illegal in some parts of Australia until recently, so...
  • "being gay was still illegal in some parts of Australia"

How do you even enforce this

    Nah Poofdahs.
  • Writer, Artist, Obscure.
^^ They have agents pretending to be gay. It's an entrapment racket, making you paranoid so you can never hit on another guy and think "Is he really gay, or pretending to be gay to get in jail?"

    a little muffled
@Chagen: I'd imagine they didn't and that's why the laws stuck around for so long. IIRC some US states had laws like that until not long ago as well.

    Re laws not working properly:

At the town Democrats' monthly meeting in my town, someone on the planning and zoning committee pointed out this problem:

    1. The planning and zoning committee (or whatever it's called) decides what can be built where in the town.  This is pretty normal for most places; there are restrictions on building, say, too many residential neighborhoods or too many industrial areas.
    2. P&Z may only use rules explicitly stated in town laws to decide where people can build what.
    3. Said town laws relating to how P&Z works do NOT include a provision that P&Z consider the load on the school system.

Therefore, P&Z may not decide solely based on "this new residential development will overload the local school with students" to reject an otherwise approved residential development.

Well, there's something for the town council to work on.  Good thing we had at least one of them in attendance that evening.  Especially that one being the new guy who is definitely a very hard worker on town management issues.
