  • Because you never know what you might see.
That's certainly not how I would put it, but I suppose that's the origin of it, yes.

Americanness may be distinguished from Britishness by a number of quite distinctly not-British values, for example:

    • Pride in "America", and America specifically
    • Distrust of authority, bringing with it a certain rebelliousness
    • Republicanism
    • A strong individualist leaning
    • The "American Dream"

@Bobby: Yeah, I can see that.

This makes me an Un-American citizen despite being born and raised here, of course.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
I suppose the question I should be asking is, "Is America a nation?"

The impression I get is that it is.
  • Inside, too dark to read
"A nation is a group of people who share culture, ethnicity, language and/or territory... a nation is not identical to a state. Countries where the social
concept of 'nation' coincides with the political concept of 'state' are
    called nation states."

I certainly share culture, language and territory with other Americans. Not so much political values.
  • No True Scotsman. We have that sort of shit here in the states too but mostly done by bigoted rednecks.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
I'm familiar with the definition of "nation".  But is it not possible to belong to a nation and not hold its majority values?

The values I listed above, by the way, are ones which I would identify as being "foreign" to Britain.
  • Inside, too dark to read
@Bobby: Certainly. That leaves us with the question of what the identity is of people born in America who have no pride in America specifically, have more affection for monarchy than republic, and like communities and authority.
  • a little muffled
@MousaThe14: So, uh, why shouldn't the rest of Britain care, exactly? It's not as though they aren't royalty there...

I mean, the reason the rest of Britain shouldn't care is that there's no real reason anyone should care, but I don't see why the English should care more than anyone else.
  • I can't help but think of the "if you didn't cry at this you have no soul" thing.
  • but it's imposdible not to cry during a Pixar movie! it goes against the laws of nature.

    (void)
The Queen, by the way, does have at least one useful purpose for Great Britain: It's much harder to complain about «welfare queens» when you have an actual Queen.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Who is on welfare/our taxes? :D
  • So she's a royal queen and a wellfare queen if only she were a gay man.

Also I'm not sure we use welfare queen over here.

    Usually scroungers or something.

^Would you 'eat' her 'royal jelly'?
  • certainly but that's not the point the point is it would create another queen based pun.

I thought when Prince William said "I will" to the vows, Kate would have to say "I Kate" to them also.
  • If I were getting married to a William, I'd be tempted to do that.

Except that I am a William.
  • Have the bride do it.
