Traditional-style JRPG turn-based battles

  • I like Turn Based combat, I find it helps be more strategic.

I like live combat, I find it is more exciting.

  • But you never had any to begin with.
    ^^^ ...
  • ^ I'll explain, after his most recent bitchfit, Chagen thinks he needs to post that everything he says is his own opinion.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
You needed another arrow. Your post pointed to Saigyouji's post.

ATB system is kind of... I don't like it.  But I think that's just the fault of Square(soft/Enix) for not doing it well, since Atelier Iris (2, anyway, I haven't played any other) and Grandia 2 and a lot of other games had a superficially similar system that was a lot more fun.  Final Fantasy X got rid of the parts I don't like about the usual ATB system though, so I kind of thought that was the best Final Fantasy battle system.

    *AHEM* Mod voice time:

If you don't like his opinion, explain your dislike.  Don't just tell him to STFU.  If you hate the post that much, ignore it.  (Not to mention that the point you disliked (which you didn't even make clear at first) is off-topic.)

    > I'm gonna pipe up for enjoyment of turn based battle systems.  For
me one of the factors is the visuals of the attacks. Due to the turn
based battle system there is more focus on snazzy looking attacks, and
this is one of the things I appreciate.

Y'know, this would be nice if the battles were actually the focus of the game.  For example, in tactical RPGs, this is awesome.

However, when I'm trying to advance the story or explore the dungeon, this becomes tedious.
  • Oh shit did it? Sorry Saigyouji, that was directed at Chagen!
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^^

Yeah there does have to be a fine balance with random battles, but I kinda prefer them to seeing the enemies on the screen that I can avoid. I'm not sure why to be honest.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    I much prefer CT's on-screen enemies.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^ Each to their own I s'pose. :)
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
I want a Final Fantasy I that doesn't suck, that is all I want.

And maybe a Final Fantasy II with non-shitty enemies and no Blood Sword.
  • ^ Or just play Final Fantasy X because it's the most fun Final Fantasy game.  Or IX because it has the best characters/story.  Or don't play Final Fantasy and play a better series instead.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
FFX would be infinitely greater with a jobs system like in FFX-2.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
I'll take my third option and continue working on my own so I don't have to worry about disliking anything in it except for what I put in it myself.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
^^^ I don't know FFIX's story, but I do know that I kinda hate the character designs.

You can't blame them for creating an easy transition into FFX's better character designs.

Eh, I liked them.  If nothing else, I thought they were way better than the ones in 7, or 8.  12 probably had better character designs but I didn't play it enough to form any sort of opinion on it really.  10 was alright, but when I think of 10 I always think of Tidus's stupid outfit.  And Wakka's hair.  And all the Final Fantasy games before 7 that I played just kind of bored me so I never paid attention to them.
  • Eiko's outfit just bugs me. I mean, at least Kuja is old enough to be one sexy slice of beefcake.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
I like 12 and 13 better than all of them.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    I prefer FFVII's character designs over FFIX's.

That said, I prefer FFVI's over either of those's.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    I like Final Fantasy, period.
  • Eiko's outfit bugs me because... it's horrible.  However, Final Fantasy IX has Freya and Vivi which more than makes up for Eiko looking ridiculous.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
The main character has that tail.

    And then, Quina.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Fran's outfit bugs the shit out of me.

Mostly because Ashe/Vaan isn't wearing it

FFXII Would have been so much better if they had dropped Vaan. Seriously, guy has 0 contribution to the story.

Only good part of FFX was it's combat system. The lack of ATB was great, no waiting for someone's turn to come up so someone DOES something. And the turn orders added strategy

FXIII was possibly the least enjoyable battle system I've ever used.

    A A A A A A A (paradigm Shift) A A A A A A A.

    Etc
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Yeah, originally they had Basch in the lead role but then they changed it to Vaan.

^ In FFXII you selected a few gambits and just moved the joystick for almost the entire game. Yeah, their system wasn't too good.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
^ Never played FFXII as the battles looked suspiciously Real Time. I like my FFs with turn based :D
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Well it was, the enemies were on the map and the ATB defined the times you hit, but you could move around all you want  so you could run from an enemy, hit it, and go away until your ATB recharged.

Eventually after awhile though it became more favorable to use beatsticks than "black mages" since the fights revolved around 1 enemy commonly, and spamming Blizzaga or some other high power spell was less proficient than hitting an enemy with a Deathbringer sword with a 10% chance of an extra attack along with it, and still do the same damage to them since the max was 9999 (in the International one there were jobs and no damage cap so other spells targeting weaknesses were albeit better).
