I feel weird being unable to recognize more than 7/8 of those crazy Word Salad Titles people keep bringing up on TvTropes.

    Mind supplying examples?

Well, I understand Neon Genesis Evangelion and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and then there's that Pani Poni Dash! thing Spain keeps bringing up. Some of it overlaps with visual novels, like Saya No Uta showing up as a Forum Games target. Probably quicker just to link to our Manga & Anime forum and say I don't know what most of those titles are.

Even Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha sounds absurd to me. And why the hell do we have to call the page Keroro Gunsou when Sgt. Frog would be so much clearer?

Because we're inconsistent about which name we use, basically.  Ideally, we'd use the Japanese name if the show is only in Japan, and the English title if the show is licensed in some English-speaking country (and common fan-translations of the title should only ever be alternate titles for the page, never the main title, unless they end up being the official English title), but... that would make way too much sense so of course TV Tropes won't do that.

Well, I've barely heard of Pani Poni Dash and Saya no Uta and Keroro Gunsou / Sgt. Frog myself.  That last one has a pretty distinctive cast, but the others I barely recognize the names of.
  • Writer, Artist, Obscure.
    Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

    ... That sounds utterly absurd.
  • Eh.  The "Lyrical" part is the only strange part.  Her name is Nanoha and she is a magical girl.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
*mourns the Super Punk Octo Pudding Gas Mark Seven trope name*

Seriously, it was a spot-on parody.
  • Writer, Artist, Obscure.
Meh, I suppose I'm still not used to titles after my very long separation from Manga. I really should've been complaining about Pani Poni Dash and how Keroro Gunso should be called Sgt. Frog since we're speaking English here.

    a little muffled
It was, but it was really hard to remember. I finally got it down like a week before it was renamed, I swear.

Of course, this begs the question of why on earth "Ultra Super Death Gorefest Chainsawer 3000" hasn't been renamed, because it has the exact same problem.

Edit@MousaThe14: "Keroro-gunsou" doesn't translate to "sergeant frog", though. If the English title were Sgt. Keroro, fans might have been more willing to accept it.

  • Obligatory Goro Goro Iki plug.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
That it was difficult to remember proves it was an accurate parody!

*biased because I remembered the name just fine*

^^ Is that that thing with lots of gorn or that thing with lots of nude muscular men?

@ Super Punk Octo Pudding Gas Mark Seven?  Super Punk Octo Gas Pudding Mark Seven? Super Octo Punk Gas Pudding Mark Seven?

    ...and I've already forgotten.
  • It is neither Gantz nor Cho Aniki, so no.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
^^ "Gas Mark Seven" is a single lexeme, so that shouldn't be an issue.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I know it starts with Super and I know that "Mark Seven" is a linguistic unit (is that what you mean by "lexeme"?), but apart from that, that leaves 4! = 24 different possible permutations of the other words.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    How about Komodo no Jikan?

I may be being repetitive, but the on;y anime I've seen is around 12 episodes of Cowboy Bebop, so I'm just as confused at this confoungled anime naming nonsense.

^^ No, not mark seven.  "Gas mark seven" is a single multiword expression.  Never used a gas cooker?

That makes it five linguistic units, but I dunno, I just didn't find the order difficult to remember.  It's easy to remember that "super" comes first and "gas mark seven" comes last, and that "punk" follows "super".  And "octo pudding" rolls off the tongue easier than "pudding octo".

    "Komodo no Jikan"

Ah yes, the deeply biological and medical work with copious amounts of zoophilia.

@Khwarizmi: Nope.  Been using electric all this time, except for short periods of time living in places with gas stoves.  And I don't think that's what you mean anyway.

@ the post above Khwarizmi's: Kodomo no Jikan is the infamous series featuring a role-reversal of lolicon stories.

Edit: Oh wait you said Komodo
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
But wait I thought it was just lolicon. Are you saying it's deep, meaningful art MYRMIDON?
  • edited 2011-04-27 21:03:28
It is truly a travesty that Kodomo No Jikan is not required reading in every humanities class.

For some reason I feel like making a jab at Strike Witches but there is no meaningful place to put it.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Note: I don't actually think that. It just seems to be his new hatecrush.
  • ^^ Strike Witches is great, don't say bad things about it! D:

*mourns the Super Punk Octo Pudding Gas Mark Seven trope name*

I keep thinking one of our artists should make a title screen out of that name and make it the page image.

Edit: v and by title screen I mean an intro title logo thing.
  • I'm imagining it as an NES game.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Unfortunately the only cheapo fanservice animesque videogame series that is easily accessible is Valis.  Or, can anyone name some more?

Every single hentai visual novel ever.

    GalGun
Chou Jigen Game Neptune (because I forget what its English title is and I don't want to look it up)
    Doki Doki Majo Shinpan
One of the Strike Witches video games maybe?
