The decline and fall of Anonymous

    (small Thread Hop)

Guys, cultural genocide is an actual term with a meaning that doesn't have to involve literal genocide or even violence. Mind you, it's more like subcultural genocide, which obviously wouldn't be so bad, but still, criticize what he said for something else.

Anyhow, I agree with Don Zabu. Calling it a culture/subculture doesn't mean it's a good thing to keep around.

Still, I think Anonymous is more resilient than that. If 4chan dies, I think many would be eager to become the next moot, and it's not like there aren't many related imageboards and similar. Anonymous doesn't need a central entity.

That's because too many Tropers can't take themselves lightly.

Which is another thing 4chan helped me with, actually. I was a shithead when I was 14, and being in a place where I constantly had to defend myself forced me to either retreat or start to take myself less seriously. Now I'm a pretty chill person, and I never get angry during an argument. Even when I really disagree with the other side. Like now.

    I'm not mad, just disappointed.

The term "we" tends to get thrown around too much on that site. Somebody came up with a good solution to helping out a local government on the Travel board? The ego-stroking white knights from other boards get to claim that they did it because the person who posted that wasn't wearing a nametag and did it IN THE NAME OF ANONYMOUS.

Anyone that does anything without wanting to be attributed for it, such as donating 300,000 dollars to a charity or helping out a person on the street in getting a burger? That act gets attributed to a bunch of lazy fucks posting porn on 4chan because of their attempt at making a monopoly on the term "Anonymous".
  • honestly the words we andus and such are actually destructiveto the conceptof the individual.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
You should add your little "anonychan culture" to that list of cultures that were killed off to make it a fact.
  • Yeah I was udner the impressiont hat ED was just another Uncyclopedia so Inever really went.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
"That's because too many Tropers can't take themselves lightly."

Honestly, no. I think it's because many people do not like being insulted (imagine that) and many people do not appreciate the 'Lol ur a fag'-type comments.
  • And another thing, when did it become customary to call each other "prefix-" fags?

Seems awful butthurt in this thread...

I have no idea who this is directed towards, so I will calmly refute all of your points. You are silly.

^^^ That's the impression I get every time any tropers mention 4chan...

    Shut up, pedofag.

    lolololol troll'd

    SUPER MAD u jellyfish?

Vorpy, if you're in a car with your family, and your dad is driving, do you say "I traveled with my father there, who drove us?" No, you say "we," because it's a lot simpler. I can't personally take credit for most of /tg/'s ideas or /v/'s theories, but I was often there, and I often contributed. I was there when the Car Lesbians game got created. I was there to contribute ideas to Pressure, /v/'s underwater survival horror game. I was there when /b/ hunted down a covert pedophile in '07, and helped spread the man's docs to make sure the police caught him. I'm just one person, one tiny cog in a machine made up of more than eight million people, but we've all added something to a cultural tapestry twenty years in the making. That's not worthless.

I agree that there are people who use Anonymous to try to get "street cred" or something equally idiotic, and, hell, I'll admit that the idea of being able to say "I was there when it all started" appeals to the romantic part of me, but that doesn't mean that Anonymous is only worthy of destruction.

4chan isn't going anywhere. 4chan.org itself may die, but there will always be the demand for an anonymous imageboard. The only question is whether it'll be 420chan or 7chan that takes the brunt of the new users.

Ninjaclown, "fag" is sort of like "guy." "Guy" used to mean an effigy that was burned on Bonfire Night in Britain, but gradually came to mean any flamboyantly dressed man. Gradually, "guy" became a neutral term, as it was used to describe any man (or even woman). "Fag" has undergone a similar evolution; it no longer necessarily means "homosexual person," and can even be a term of endearment, rather like the usage of "cunt" in Australia and Britain.

EDIT: Cygan, I never said "cunt" wasn't rude. Used as an insult, it's very offensive in any English-speaking country (HA). But in Australia and Britain, it can also be used as an affectionate term for lower-class people, similar to the usage of the N-word in America.

If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
And outside of several specific acts, Anonymous generally acts like, well, a bunch of teenagers who do not need to take responsibility for their actions.

"Cunt" is still a very offensive term in Australia THANK YOU VERY MUCH
  • If anonymous is truly anonymous, then a central website that gathers and represents them contradicts the definition of anonymous itself. Anonymity can (and must) exist where no one thinks to look for them. They can live on without ED, they SHOULD live on without ED.

    ^^^^7chan, no doubt.

^You mean 4chan. Anonymity wasn't played up as much on ED.

I was there when /b/ hunted down a covert pedophile in '07,

    [citation needed]

I was there too, and so was Bob, RTL, GMH, and Fast Eddie, and Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush and Ke$ha too! We totally helped catch that pedophile who has no name and was loosely connected to an event that may have not happened.

  • Glaives are better.
Cygan, if someone isn't mature enough to dismiss or ignore childish insults, then the internet isn't the place for them.
  • Same goes for 4chan, I guess. Anonymity may be part of its appeal, but it is also the first place anyone goes to target anonymous.

    Glaives are better.
Vorpy, Ronald Reagan was there, but the others weren't. Nice guess, though. :)

EDIT: I never said that I personally hunted down a pedophile, or wrote Pressure, or developed Car Lesbians. I said that I was there, which is true, and that I contributed, which is also true. Those projects were the product of other peoples' work, and as I said I only contributed a small amount (even relative to the size of the projects). If that's claiming responsibility, then I'd say that I did nothing at all, because far better people than I did far more than I ever did.

Besides, you guys are acting like /b/ and /v/ (/b/ 2.0) are the only 4chan boards.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
/wg/ is the best anyway. (subjectivity)
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭

It's also really fucking weird how even though they are supposed to
be Anonymous, people are trying to take credit for things
that they have done individually, as a single person, rather than as a
whole union of people with "no faces and no names". Being part of Anonychan is about as meaningful as calling yourself a non-conformist.
  • It's more pitiable than anything.

I know, we were all there, because EVERYTHING we do that we don't want attention for is the doing of a mysterious band of internet paladins known as anonychan, who is everywhere and anywhere and is the most important force in America as we speak!!!

Even the world! All of the random internet bans and lost sites will never stop us from claiming to do things we didn't do, and taking credit for things we did do and dropping the anonychan title for something more clever while revelling in the "anonychan culture" that is completely based on memes, lulz and trolling!
  • Hell, I can remember when this came up:

  • Glaives are better.
    That was especially funny.

Reading the comments on that video is especially funny as well.

Nothing but Hype Backlash and Fan Dumb.

I'll admit: If there's one cultural genocide that wouldn't cause me to lose any sleep, it would be the purging of Youtube comments.

EDIT: Also, Vorpy, why the hell do you keep calling it "Anonychan?" It makes you sound like Chris-chan.
