    @Komodin: There has not been a single 2D Sonic game that suffered from having too many playable characters. This is because the characters were done as options, as variations of Sonic with tweaked abilities. Similar to the Wisp elements--Flight, Burrowing, sound familiar? Ah yes. But the 3D critical failures beginning with Sonic Adventure have since sullied the name of extra characters by binding them to awful gameplay mechanics. That's why we fought tooth and nail to get some of them back for Sonic 4, and it's a shame that it seems that won't carry over to Sonic Generations.

    Sonic 2. Sonic 3. Sonic & Knuckles. Considered amongst the highest points in the Sonic franchise. Not one of them was Sonic Only.

    You certainly don't; fans loved Sonic Colours. No werehog, no sword, no guns and vehicles, no treasure hunting, no mecha shooting, no fishing. But at that point, optional playable characters---all playing like Sonic---would've been a bonus.
