(Being half-facetious here)
Sonic fans get a bad rap. I say this as someone who stopped being interested in Sonic after the Genesis Era, and only started getting interested again when Sonic 4 was announced... and yes, I was among the complainers. (Not so much now that Tails will probably come back in Episode 2. But man, you really think they could've handled the game physics better... the physics were what most fans were complaining about, not the eye color or anything.)
But yeah. I've been a member of the Star Wars fandom. I've also seen some pretty unnecessary, shockingly indulgent Kingdom Hearts fanfics. I don't think Sonic fans are worst than the general folk. Consider the material they've had to work with over recent years.
But, if the Sonic fan haters/supporters of Sonic 4 are to be believed, if you liked the Genesis games, you are obligated to love Sonic 4 unconditionally regardless of whether or not you played it or had fun with it (I'm strawmanning here).
"Sonic the Hedgehog 4 seemed to me to be built mostly from desperation. Compare it with Sonic Colors, which seemed to be built mostly from inspiration."
What you just said there, was the general consensus of the fandom, at least on the official SEGA forums.
In fact, I think the tvtropes article on Sonic Colors even notes the irony of it... seriously, there were fallen away fans like me who hunted down the SEGA forums to complain about the direction of Sonic 4, and when Sonic Colours was announced and released, we couldn't stop gushing about it.
