IIRC the Mythbusters (or was it None of the Above?) tried shooting lots of kinds of fruits through cannons, but they were destroyed on shot and didn't do much.

It's a safety measure. If you see a pomegranate that looks like a pineapple, you know something fishy is going on there and know better to leave it alone, so therefore when you see something that looks like a pomegranate, you can safely assume it actually is one.

@Stormtroper: I remember them testing if you could use cheese as cannonballs, but don't remember them ever using a cannon with fruit ammo. If it's something they never tested, that makes me wish the show was still on the air so that they could.
